West Spotlight | Weir shoots Senators to fourth straight

The Warwick Senators maintained their hold on third position with the hard earned nine-point home victory against the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Kyana Weir delivered two halves with 13 points and 3/3 three-point shooting each to keep the Warwick Senators winning in the absence of Jayda Clark as they overcame a plucky Eastern Suns 89-80 in Friday night NBL1 West.
The Senators were back home at Warwick Stadium having won their past three games and while the Eastern Suns had lost their past two, they have been playing impressively in recent times including beating the East Perth Eagles and were trying to stay in playoff contention.
Warwick then had a hot shooting start going 7/9 from three-point land in the first quarter and 9/11 for the first half but they could never shake the Suns and it was just a three-point game by three quarter-time.
The Senators were able to end up securing the nine-point victory to improve to an 11-4 record with four straight wins while the Eastern Suns are now 4-11 following three successive defeats.

The Senators ended up shooting stunning 16/22 from beyond the arc in the win while going 52 per cent overall from the field but the Suns stayed in touch with 15/23 free-throw shooting and pulling down 13 offensive rebounds.
In the absence of Jayda Clark with a knee injury, Kyana Weir once again came up huge for Warwick ending up with 26 points, four assists and two rebounds on a perfect 6/6 three-point shooting.
Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard also landed 4/7 from downtown for 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals with Chloe Forster contributing 19 points, eight assists and five boards, and Greta Kampschroeder 11 points, five assists, four steals and two rebounds.
Trista Hull had eight points in the first quarter for the Eastern Suns and ended up with 19 for the game to go with 14 rebounds and three blocks with 7/12 shooting.
Alyssa Bowen also had 19 points, three rebounds and two assists on 3/5 three-point shooting with Gaby Bronson adding 15 points, six assists and five boards, Denae Civich 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, and Yume Knoll nine points, three assists and three steals.

The Senators did need to keep winning to maintain their hold on a top four spot while the Eastern Suns also arrived at Warwick Stadium needing the win to stay in the playoff hunt setting up a fascinating contest.
Warwick were able to open up an early nine-point lead before Kalamunda responded with a 9-0 run of their own to tie scores up before eventually it was the Senators opening up a 29-23 advantage by quarter-time.
Kyana Weir had 10 of those points for Warwick and Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard eight while as a team they went 7/9 from beyond the arc with that pair combining for four of the seven made triples.
The Senators only got up two more three-point attempts in the second quarter but made both of them with one more each to Weir and Clinch Hoycard and by half-time they had 24 points between them.
Warwick were leading 50-41 at half-time on the back of that but the Eastern Suns were staying in touch with Alyssa Bowen scoring 11 points, Gaby Bronson 11 and Denae Civich 10.
The Suns then made a real game of it in the third quarter by going on a 10-0 run and ending up outscoring the Senators 21 points to 15 to be within three points at three quarter-time.
That set up a big finish but the Senators dug deep once again with 24 points to 18 in the last quarter to grind out the eventual nine-point win to consolidate their top four spot but the Suns certainly lost no admirers in their fighting performance.
The Senators now head to Mandurah to take on the Magic next Saturday night while the Eastern Suns are on the road to the defending champion Cockburn Cougars that same evening.
