Round 6 of the NBL1 South 2026 season arrives with no shortage of storylines across the conference.
From twin sisters going head to head, to returning stars making their long-awaited debuts, rivalry cups back on the line and a league-wide reminder that basketball can be about more than wins and losses, this weekend shapes as one of the biggest rounds of the season so far.
Here are this week’s Starting Five storylines to watch.
1. Froling v Froling as twins collide at State Basketball Centre
There may not be a more unique matchup in the conference this weekend than Saturday night’s clash between the Knox Raiders and Northern Force, with twin sisters Keely and Alicia Froling set to face each other at 6:00pm at the State Basketball Centre.
For Northern Force, the game comes just one week after the club secured its historic first win in the NBL1 South competition, a breakthrough moment for the expansion side after a tough opening month to the season.
Now comes another challenge against a Knox Raiders side currently sitting inside the top eight, but Northern enters with confidence and with the conference’s leading scorer on its roster.
Keely Froling has been dominant through the opening five rounds, averaging a competition-best 27.2 points per game alongside 10.0 rebounds, immediately establishing herself as one of the league’s premier players.
Knox meanwhile continue to build consistency in eighth position, with Alicia Froling playing a major role across the opening stretch of the season.
Family bragging rights, ladder implications and one of the league’s newest clubs looking to build momentum. Saturday night’s matchup has a little bit of everything.

2. Country Cup rivalry reignites in Ballarat and Bendigo
One of the conference’s fiercest regional rivalries resumes this weekend as Ballarat and Bendigo square off again in the latest chapter of the Country Cup.
Round 1 saw the spoils shared, with the Bendigo Braves men and Ballarat Miners women each claiming victories to take home their respective trophies.
Now comes Part 2.
The Ballarat women enter the weekend firmly inside the top five and looking every bit a finals contender, while Bendigo continue searching for consistency after an up-and-down start to the season.
On the men’s side, Bendigo sits just outside the top eight and will be desperate to strengthen its finals push, while Ballarat is still searching for momentum after a difficult opening five rounds.
Regional rivalries always bring extra emotion, and with both clubs chasing important mid-season positioning, expect another physical and passionate Country Cup battle.

3. Keilor reloads as Rocci and Bourne return for Game of the Week
The Keilor Thunder women may be about to look very different.
After opening the season without two of the biggest names in Australian basketball, Keilor is expected to welcome back both Maddison Rocci and Isabelle Bourne for Saturday night’s Game of the Week.
Rocci arrives fresh off her recent release from the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo, while also being announced this week as a new signing for the Geelong United in the WNBL.
Bourne meanwhile returns following the completion of her season with Lointek Gernika Bizkaia in Spain, before also being announced as a signing for the Sydney Flames.
The timing could not be bigger for Keilor.
Bourne claimed the 2024 NBL1 South Women’s MVP award and remains one of the conference’s most impactful players, while Rocci’s playmaking and experience instantly elevate the Thunder’s championship aspirations.
If both take the floor this weekend, the race for the top four may suddenly have another serious contender entering the conversation.

4. A former MVP returns as Shea Ili joins Sandringham
The Sandringham Sabres continue building one of the conference’s most experienced rosters, with 2019 NBL MVP Shea Ili officially announced to suit up for the club.
Ili returns to Sandringham alongside fellow Melbourne United players David Barlow, Kyle Bowen and Malith Machar, while also joining assistant coach Andy Lim within the Sabres program.
Widely regarded as one of the best perimeter defenders in Australian basketball, Ili’s addition immediately creates intrigue around Sandringham’s ceiling for the remainder of the season.
His arrival adds even more high-level experience to an already talented Sabres lineup, with Sandringham continuing to strengthen its championship credentials as the season progresses.

5. Melbourne and Geelong unite for “Shoot for Kindness, Blockout Bullying”
Basketball will take on a bigger purpose this weekend when Melbourne and Geelong United come together for the “Shoot for Kindness, Blockout Bullying” clash.
As part of the initiative, the clubs will present the Upstander Award, recognising the player who best demonstrates leadership, kindness, courage and sportsmanship both on and off the court.
The concept, driven by Shoot For Kindness founder Alexander Scott, focuses on celebrating players who choose positivity, support teammates and stand up for others during moments of pressure and adversity.
Club leaders and team staff will nominate athletes who embody those values, with referees selecting the final recipient on game day.
In a competition built on community as much as competition, the initiative serves as another reminder that impact can extend well beyond the scoreboard.
