Match Report: Falcons Pull Away After Halftime to Defeat Chargers

 

The Hobart Chargers produced an energetic opening half but were unable to contain a balanced Waverly Falcons attack, falling 88-69 at The Hutchins School on Saturday evening in Round 14 NBL1 South Women’s action.

 

Hobart started strongly in front of their home crowd, taking a narrow 23-22 lead at quarter time behind the aggressive play of Tishara Morehouse and Sharna Thompson. The Chargers found success getting into the paint early and matched Waverly’s offensive firepower in a highly entertaining opening period.

 

The game remained tightly contested through much of the second quarter. Hobart received important contributions from Tyia Singleton, Chloe Broomhall and Claire Murray, while Waverly relied on the playmaking of Tayla Dalton and Millicent McCarthy to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

 

Despite Hobart’s strong start, the Falcons gradually seized control late in the first half, taking a 47-38 advantage into the main break. Waverly’s ability to generate second-chance opportunities and convert turnovers into points proved a major factor as momentum began to shift.

 

The third quarter ultimately decided the contest. After closing within single digits early in the period, Hobart struggled to contain Waverly’s offensive execution. Dalton orchestrated the Falcons attack brilliantly, while Katelyn Shumate asserted herself around the basket and on the boards. Waverly outscored Hobart 19-17 for the quarter, stretching the lead to 66-55 heading into the final term.

 

The Chargers continued to fight, with Thompson providing perimeter scoring and Morehouse pushing the pace offensively, but every Hobart rally was answered. Sophia Locandro hit timely baskets, Dalton continued to create opportunities for teammates, and Shumate’s dominance on the glass prevented the Chargers from building sustained momentum.

 

Waverly closed out the game with a 22-14 final quarter to complete the 19-point victory.

 

Dalton was exceptional for the Falcons, recording 20 points, eight assists and five steals in a complete floor performance. Shumate delivered a powerful double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds, while Locandro added 18 points and seven rebounds. Waverly finished with four players scoring at least 18 points and six players with five or more rebounds.

 

For Hobart, Thompson led all Chargers scorers with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists despite shooting difficulties from the field. Morehouse provided an efficient 15 points and six assists, while Singleton added 11 points and five rebounds. Broomhall contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

 

The statistics highlighted where the game was won. Waverly dominated the glass 52-35, including a significant 20-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to a decisive 19-0 edge in second-chance points. The Falcons also held advantages in assists (21-12), points in the paint (44-30) and bench scoring (11-10).

 

Hobart’s outside shooting proved costly. The Chargers connected on just 4-of-22 attempts from three-point range (18.2 percent), while Waverly knocked down 10 three-pointers at 34.5 percent. Although Hobart shot an excellent 87.5 percent from the free throw line, they were unable to overcome Waverly’s superior rebounding and shot volume.

 

The Chargers showed plenty of effort and competitiveness throughout the night, leading early and remaining within striking distance for long stretches. However, Waverly’s depth, rebounding dominance and balanced scoring attack ultimately proved too much to overcome as the Falcons secured an impressive road victory. 

 

Match Report: Falcons Edge Chargers in Heartbreaker at The Hutchins School

 

The Hobart Chargers were left devastated after surrendering a late lead in a thrilling Round 14 contest, with the Waverly Falcons escaping The Hutchins School with a dramatic 94-92 victory on Saturday night.

 

In a game that featured 14 lead changes, Hobart appeared on course for an important home win after carrying a 72-66 advantage into the final quarter and extending the margin to as much as 11 points midway through the term.

 

However, Waverly delivered a strong finishing burst, outscoring the Chargers 28-20 in the final quarter and stealing the result in the final moments.

 

The Chargers came out firing early, opening the game with strong defensive pressure and efficient ball movement. Captain Jacob Richards led the charge, attacking the basket relentlessly and earning repeated trips to the free throw line as Hobart built a 23-19 advantage at quarter time.

 

Waverly responded in the second term behind the shot-making of Reaudale Williams and the inside presence of Mawot Mag. The Falcons briefly grabbed control, but Luke Rosendale orchestrated Hobart’s offence superbly, finding teammates in good positions and helping the Chargers regain momentum. Rosendale delivered several key assists and knocked down timely triples as Hobart entered halftime with a 47-44 lead.

 

The third quarter showcased some of Hobart’s best basketball of the evening. Richards continued his outstanding performance, while Xavier Clarke caught fire from beyond the arc and Nicholas Paul provided important interior scoring and rim protection. The Chargers controlled much of the quarter and pushed the lead to eight points heading into the final break, holding a 72-66 advantage.

 

When Tommy Stewart buried a three-pointer and Xavier Clarke converted inside early in the fourth quarter, Hobart appeared poised to close out the game. The Chargers led 83-75 with just over five minutes remaining and still held a seven-point cushion inside the final three minutes.

 

But Waverly refused to go away. Williams caught fire from deep, draining a pair of crucial three-pointers, while Malik Meunier began attacking the rim in transition. Consecutive triples from Williams turned the momentum completely, and Meunier’s late baskets brought the Falcons level.

 

With seconds remaining and the scores tied at 92, Waverly secured the decisive play as Meunier finished at the rim with three seconds left to give the visitors a 94-92 lead.

 

Hobart had one final possession, but Richards’ contested three point attempt at the buzzer fell short, handing Waverly a dramatic road victory.

 

Richards was spectacular for the Chargers, finishing with 32 points, seven assists and six rebounds while shooting 5-of-8 from three-point range. Rosendale produced a masterful floor game with 15 points and 13 assists, repeatedly creating quality looks for his teammates.

 

Clarke added 16 points with three three-pointers, while Bennie Lewis provided an important spark off the bench with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nicholas Paul also contributed strongly with nine points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

 

For Waverly, Williams delivered 22 points on an ultra-efficient 9-of-12 shooting performance, including a perfect 3-of-3 from deep. Mag finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Meunier flirted with a triple double, compiling 15 points 10 rebounds and nine assists.

 

The statistical battle highlighted just how close the contest was. Hobart shot better from beyond the arc, knocking down 13 three pointers at 37.1 percent compared with Waverly’s eight triples. The Chargers also recorded 26 assists and led for more than 31 minutes of game time.

 

Ultimately, Waverly’s advantage inside proved decisive. The Falcons outscored Hobart 54-34 in the paint, held a 47-38 rebounding edge and generated 15 points from turnovers. Their ability to consistently finish around the basket allowed them to stay within striking distance before producing the late comeback.

 

For Hobart, it was a painful result after leading for the majority of the night and delivering one of their strongest offensive performances of the season. Despite the disappointment, the Chargers showed they can compete with one of the competition’s strongest sides, pushing the Falcons to the final possession in an entertaining NBL1 South classic.
