Northern Tasmania has a new name, a new look and a unified future in elite basketball, with the Northern Force officially unveiled as the region’s NBL1 South representative.

Launched today, the Force branding including name, logo and colours, marks the beginning of a new chapter designed to unite the basketball community across Northern Tasmania under one identity.

Club Chair Craig Gibson said the Force name reflects strength, connection and regional pride, while positioning the club for long-term sustainability.

“This is an exciting time for basketball in our end of the state,” Gibson said.

“The Northern Force represents everyone who loves the game across our region, and it gives us a strong, shared identity to build around.”

The Force will field both men’s and women’s teams in NBL1 South from the 2026 season, aligning with league requirements for a single, integrated club model and strengthening pathways from grassroots participation through to semi-professional and professional opportunities.

Zoe Mesman has been appointed head coach of the women’s program, while New Zealander Jayden Smith will lead the men’s team.

“There’s a real sense of momentum around the group already,” Mesman said.

“Everyone is buying into what the Force is building, and the energy heading towards opening night has been fantastic.”

Tasmania’s Minister for Sport Nick Duigan welcomed the launch, highlighting basketball’s continued growth across the state.

“Basketball has enormous momentum right now,” Duigan said.

“The Northern Force will play a key role in growing participation, strengthening pathways and inspiring the next generation of players.”

The Northern Force will open their inaugural NBL1 South campaign with a home clash against the Frankston Blues on Friday 27th March, before backing up the following night against the Nunawading Spectres.

The NBL1 South 2026 season tips off on Friday 27th March 2026. For all the latest updates, including player signings, coaching appointments and league news, make sure you’re following NBL1 South on Facebook and Instagram.
