Courtney Woods did all she could once again but it wasn’t quite enough for the Townsville Flames with Monique Bobongie starring as the Mackay Meteorettes started their NBL1 North road double with the 95-83 win.

The Flames were back home at Carmichael Ford Stadium having won both games of their road trip to Sunshine Coast and Northside last weekend with Woods coming up huge in both.

They were without Kate Searle as they hosted the visiting Meteorettes who had won their past four matches but it was the Flames who made the hot start for the early 11-point advantage.

But Mackay worked on top the longer the game went and ended up with the 12-point victory to make it five in-a-row and improve to a 6-1 record.

Townsville did end up taking 11 extra shots than Mackay for the game and had 13 offensive rebounds to nine, but the Meteorettes shot 52 per cent from the field to 39 along with going 17/21 at the free-throw line to 8/9 for the win.

Monique Bobongie produced a monster performance for Mackay to finish with 32 points, 10 rebounds and two assists on 13/22 shooting from the field.

River Baldwin was impressive as well with 24 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four assists with Sammie Puisis contributing 23 points and five boards, and Chelsea Brook seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Courtney Woods again put in a power of work for Townsville playing all but 51 seconds of the game to finish with 28 points, 12 assists, four rebounds and two steals with 4/10 three-point shooting.

Chailee Ward also finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Flames, Bree Stephens 12 points and five boards, Mia Murray 10 points and two assists, and Jaimee Seebohm eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Townsville were back home and looking for a third straight win with Mackay starting their road double hunting a fifth win on the trot, and it was the Flames who made the fast start to open up an early 11-point lead after an 8-0 run.

The Flames were still clinging to the 25-22 advantage by quarter-time with Courtney Woods already having 13 points and three assists despite the physicality she faced from Mackay which did catch the ire of coach Shannon Seebohm.

The Meteorettes then worked on top in the second term by scoring nine straight points and then ending up outscoring the Flames 24 points to 20 to go into half-time leading 46-45.

Monique Bobongie was up to 15 points by the half for Mackay with River Baldwin adding 13 while their team was shooting 55 per cent with Townsville going at just 41 per cent with Woods continuing to battle valiantly up to 23 points and five assists.

Mackay did open up a nine-point lead during the third quarter with Bobongie adding another 10 points but the Flames were hanging around to only be down by six at three quarter-time.

Townsville then even managed to grab the lead again early in the fourth quarter, but the Meteorettes then pulled away including another 9-0 run to end up winning by 12 to make the perfect start to their northern road double.

Townsville now won't play again until next Friday night at home to the Gold Coast Rollers with the Meteorettes backing up on Saturday night still on the road to the undefeated Cairns Dolphins.
