NBL1 Weekend Preview: May 12-14

Each week across the NBL1 there are countless games to watch. But here are three key games from the weekend to keep your eye on ahead of another massive slate of NBL1 action. 

Friday: (Women’s NBL1 South) Mount Gambier Pioneers vs Waverley Falcons

The undefeated Waverley Falcons will travel to Mount Gambier to take on the Pioneers in a major Friday night clash. 

There will be plenty of bad blood going into this game, as the Falcons stole the win in overtime in Mount Gambier last year in the NBL1 South Finals – and Bec Cole was the X-factor.

Cole and her Falcons have been literally unstoppable so far this season, with an 8-0 record. The addition of Maddi Utti from NBL1 Central has been a major addition to this title-contending squad. 

But the Pioneers are no joke, as the fifth-on-the-ladder squad has plenty of star talent in Sherrie Calleia, Miela Goodchild and Cassandra Brown (injured).

Saturday: (Men’s NBL1 East) Canberra Gunners vs Sydney Comets

The reigning NBL1 East champions will take on the new kids on the block, the Sydney Comets, on Saturday.

The Comets have been outstanding in their inaugural season with a 6-2 record.

But on Saturday they’ll face the Gunners at home, and the road trip to Canberra will be a challenge for the Comets.

Canberra will be ready, with James Toohey and Glenn Morison defending their home court.

Sunday: (Women’s NBL1 Central) South Adelaide Panthers vs Sturt Sabres

The Sturt Sabres have been the best team in NBL1 Central this season, averaging 85 points per game (three points higher than the Panthers) with an 8-0 record – the Grand Final runners-up have come out the gates with purpose. 

The Panthers may not be undefeated, but teams in Central still fear them the same. The 6-2 squad featuring Ashleigh ‘Splash’ Spencer, sharpshooter Jade Johnson and Holly Forbes are no joke.
