The Australian Gangurrus Women have claimed gold at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup, with a strong NBL1 South contingent playing a key role in the nation’s sixth title at the event.
Australia capped off an unbeaten run with an 18-9 victory over the Philippines in the gold medal game, showcasing their dominance across the tournament.
Among the championship-winning lineup were several familiar NBL1 South names. 2025 NBL1 South and National Finals champion Kristy Wallace (Knox Raiders) was joined by Emma Clark (Ringwood Hawks) and Lara McSpadden (Keilor Thunder), while former Bendigo Braves standout and 2023 NBL1 South and National Finals champion Amy Atwell added further experience to the squad.
Wallace’s impact was recognised post-tournament, named Most Valuable Player after leading Australia’s campaign. She produced a composed and efficient performance across the event, including five points and eight rebounds in the gold medal game.
Australia opened the tournament with pool wins over Malaysia (21-10) and Tonga (21-3), before defeating New Zealand 19-11 in the quarter-finals. The Gangurrus were tested throughout the knockout stages, requiring a late push to edge China 21-20 in the semi-finals before taking control in the final.
The result marks Australia’s sixth FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup title.
New Zealand’s women’s team also featured NBL1 South representation, with Sharne Robati (Casey Cavaliers) and Eva Langston (Mount Gambier Pioneers) part of their campaign.
On the men’s side, the Australian Gangurrus featured current Kilsyth Cobras forward Dillon Stith and former Hobart Chargers championship winner Sam McDaniel. The men’s team advanced through pool play with a win over Malaysia (21-10) before falling to China (21-15), and were ultimately eliminated by New Zealand, who went on to claim the title.
