A new chapter in the rivalry between the Ballarat Miners and Bendigo Braves will begin in the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 South 2026 season, with the launch of the inaugural Country Cup.

The new perpetual trophy series will feature two cups, one contested in the Men’s competition and one in the Women’s competition, adding extra significance to one of regional Victoria’s fiercest and most recognisable basketball rivalries.

The Country Cup tips off in Round 1 of the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 South 2026 season on Saturday, March 28, when Ballarat and Bendigo meet in their opening match up of the year at Selkirk Stadium, with both clubs beginning their race to claim the first honours.

Travis Merlo said the introduction of the Country Cup would help elevate an already established rivalry between the two clubs, while creating another occasion for both communities to rally behind.

“In conjunction with Bendigo, we're thrilled to launch the inaugural Country Cup, a perpetual trophy that elevates our storied rivalry with the Bendigo Braves, described as 'archrivals' after years of tough on court battles. This Saturday's March 28 clash at Selkirk Stadium kicks off the men's and women's series, putting regional pride and silverware on the line, while our Junior Under 12 Miners and Braves battle it out in a 'Super Sunday' competition on the 29th. Our Ballarat fans can expect an intense home battle as we aim to claim the first honours in NBL1 South 2026.”

From the Bendigo side, Luke McAlpine said the new concept would add further meaning to the rivalry and strengthen its connection with the wider community.

“The Country Cup is a fantastic initiative for our club and the wider Bendigo community. It brings extra pride and excitement to our rivalry with Ballarat, and gives our players and supporters something special to be part of across the season.”

With regional pride, community bragging rights and silverware on the line, the Country Cup is set to add even more heat to a rivalry that already means plenty to both clubs and their supporters.

The NBL1 South 2026 season tips off on Friday 27th March 2026. For all the latest updates, including player signings, coaching appointments and league news, make sure you’re following NBL1 South on Facebook and Instagram.
