The Hobart Chargers were unable to recover from a slow start on Saturday evening, falling 81-70 to the Diamond Valley Eagles at the Hutchins School in their Round 7 NBL1 South Women’s clash.
Despite a strong third-quarter response, the Chargers were unable to complete the comeback as Diamond Valley maintained control for much of the contest.
Diamond Valley set the tone early, producing a dominant opening quarter with efficient scoring inside and from the perimeter. Erin Riley led the charge, supported by contributions from Abbey Ellis and Sophie Byrnes, as the Eagles surged to a 30-15 lead at quarter time.
The momentum continued into the second quarter, with the Eagles extending their advantage through disciplined offence and strong defensive pressure. Hobart struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities despite efforts from Tyia Singleton and Sharna Thompson, with Diamond Valley winning the quarter 25-18 to take a commanding 55-33 lead into halftime.
Hobart responded impressively after the break, delivering their best period of the game in the third quarter. Singleton and Thompson led the offensive push, while Tishara Morehouse added key contributions as the Chargers significantly lifted their efficiency. Hobart outscored Diamond Valley 26-12 in the term to cut the margin to 67-59 at three-quarter time.
However, any hopes of a complete comeback were halted in the final quarter. Diamond Valley steadied and controlled the tempo, limiting Hobart’s scoring opportunities while continuing to find timely baskets. The Chargers were held to just 11 points in the final period, with the Eagles closing out the game 14-11 to secure the 81-70 victory.
Tyia Singleton was outstanding for Hobart, recording a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds, while Sharna Thompson also added 19 points and four assists. Chloe Broomhall contributed nine points and eight rebounds, with Morehouse finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds.
For Diamond Valley, Erin Riley led the way with 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, delivering a strong all-round performance. Abbey Ellis and Tayha Watkins each added 11 points, while a balanced team effort helped the Eagles maintain control throughout.
The result sees the Chargers unable to complete a weekend sweep at home, with Diamond Valley’s dominant first half proving decisive in the contest.

The Hobart Chargers produced a commanding performance on Saturday night, defeating the Diamond Valley Eagles 107-78 at the Hutchins School in their Round 7 NBL1 South Men’s clash.
In a well-rounded team display, the Chargers took control through the middle quarters before pulling away with a dominant second-half performance to secure a convincing win on their home court.
The opening quarter was a relatively even contest, with both sides settling into the game offensively. Hobart showed early efficiency inside through Anthony Drmic and Jacob Richards, while Diamond Valley stayed within reach through contributions from Emmanuel Malou and Daniel Poelsma. The Chargers held a narrow 20-16 lead at quarter time.
Hobart began to build momentum in the second quarter, lifting their scoring output with improved ball movement and shot making. Drmic and Xavier Clarke provided strong offensive support, while Luke Rosendale made an impact from beyond the arc. The Chargers outscored the Eagles 29-23 in the period to extend their lead to 49-39 at halftime.
The game broke open in the third quarter as Hobart delivered a decisive run. Richards and Rosendale led the charge offensively, supported by Drmic’s continued efficiency, as the Chargers overwhelmed Diamond Valley with a 36-20 quarter. Hobart stretched their lead to 85-59 heading into the final term, effectively sealing the result.
The Chargers maintained control in the fourth quarter, continuing to execute on both ends of the floor while rotating through their bench. Despite some late resistance from Diamond Valley, Hobart closed out the game with a 22-19 final period to secure a dominant 107-78 victory.
Anthony Drmic was outstanding for the Chargers with 29 points on highly efficient shooting, while Luke Rosendale added 28 points, including five three-pointers, in an impressive performance. Jacob Richards contributed 22 points and six rebounds, and Xavier Clarke added 18 points as Hobart’s offensive depth proved difficult to contain.
For Diamond Valley, Ryley Haywood led the scoring with 17 points, while Emmanuel Malou and Daniel Poelsma each added 14. Mitchell Blackburn contributed 12 points in a competitive effort.
The result sees the Chargers bounce back strongly at home, delivering one of their most complete performances of the season with consistent scoring and defensive pressure across all four quarters.
