Match Report: Chargers Women Unable to Hold Off Sabres at Home

The Hobart Chargers were unable to capitalise on a strong third-quarter resurgence, falling 80-71 to the Sandringham Sabres at The Hutchins School on Saturday evening in their Round 11 NBL1 South Women’s clash.

After leading early and remaining within striking distance throughout the contest, the Chargers were outscored 21-14 in the final quarter as Sandringham pulled away late to secure the victory.

Hobart made the brighter start, with Tyia Singleton and Tishara Morehouse leading the way offensively as the Chargers controlled much of the opening quarter. The home side held Sandringham to 14 points and took a 16-14 lead into the first break.

The momentum shifted in the second period as the Sabres found their rhythm offensively. Madison Ryan, Stephanie Reid and Isis Lopes helped Sandringham put together several scoring runs, while Hobart struggled to consistently convert at the offensive end. The visitors won the quarter 21-16 to take a 35-32 advantage into halftime.

The Chargers responded strongly after the main break. Morehouse was particularly influential, while Singleton continued to provide a strong presence inside. Hobart produced its highest-scoring quarter of the game, winning the third period 25-24 and trimming the deficit to just two points at 59-57 heading into the final term.

Early in the fourth quarter the Chargers remained within striking distance and reduced the margin to two points on multiple occasions. However, Sandringham’s defensive pressure proved decisive down the stretch. The Sabres forced key turnovers and received crucial baskets from Madison Ryan, Stephanie Reid and Lucy Cochrane to pull clear in the closing minutes.

Tishara Morehouse led Hobart with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Tyia Singleton recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Portia Chopping added 13 points. Chloe Broomhall contributed nine rebounds and seven points, while Sharna Thompson finished with nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.

For Sandringham, Madison Ryan was outstanding with 24 points and nine rebounds. Stephanie Reid added 18 points, while captain Funda Nakkasoglu scored 15 points. Isis Lopes had a major all-round impact with 10 points, seven steals and four assists, and Lucy Cochrane contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

The difference ultimately came in turnover pressure and second half execution, with Sandringham forcing 21 Hobart turnovers and controlling the final quarter to secure the nine-point win. 

Match Report: Sabres Pull Away After Strong First Half in Hobart

The Hobart Chargers were unable to keep pace with a red-hot Sandringham Sabres outfit on Saturday night, falling 106-86 at The Hutchins School in their Round 11 NBL1 South Men’s clash.

Despite several strong individual performances and a competitive opening quarter, Sandringham’s offensive efficiency and a dominance inside the paint proved the difference as the visitors secured a 20-point victory.

The Chargers started positively, matching the Sabres through much of the opening period. Jacob Richards and Luke Rosendale provided early scoring opportunities, but Sandringham finished the quarter strongly behind Malith Machar and Harry Neilson to take a 30-23 lead at the first break.

The visitors extended their advantage in the second quarter, shooting efficiently from both inside and beyond the arc. Machar caught fire from long range while Neilson controlled the paint, helping Sandringham outscore Hobart 29-26 for the term. Despite strong contributions from Richards and Rosendale, the Chargers went into halftime trailing 59-49.

Hobart worked hard to remain within striking distance after the main break. Nicholas Paul and Noah Clarke provided valuable offensive support, while Richards continued to battle on both ends of the floor. However, Sandringham consistently answered every Chargers run, winning the third quarter 24-20 to build an 83-69 lead heading into the final term.

The Sabres then put the game beyond doubt in the fourth quarter. Kyle Bowen, C.J. Asuncion-Byrd and Machar continued to find quality looks offensively, while Sandringham’s interior presence remained a constant challenge for the Chargers. The visitors closed the game with a 23-17 final period to seal the 106-86 result.

Jacob Richards led Hobart with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Noah Clarke was highly efficient with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, while Luke Rosendale added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Joe Chilcott contributed 11 points and four assists, and Tommy Stewart added seven points off the bench.

Sandringham was led by Malith Machar’s 25 points, including six three pointers. Harry Neilson produced a dominant double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while captain Kyle Bowen added 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Elliott Brown contributed 12 points and eight rebounds, while C.J. Asuncion-Byrd finished with 11 points.

The Sabres’ efficiency around the basket proved crucial, scoring 58 points in the paint and shooting 50.9 percent from two-point range. Sandringham also controlled the contest for the majority of the evening, leading for almost 37 minutes and steadily increasing its advantage after quarter time.
