Eagles Recap | Women/Men Round 2

The East Perth Eagles scored a pair of wins in their home openers on Saturday against the Mandurah Magic.

It was an Easter Saturday to savour for the East Perth Eagles with both the women and men scoring big wins with Jasmin Fejo, Sydney Wright, Stacey Barr, David Okwera, Lat Mayen and Bing Huang all playing starring roles.
It was the first games of the season for the Eagles in Peter Campbell Basketball Arena at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre as they played host to the Mandurah Magic on Saturday.
It proved to be exciting performances too beginning with the women remaining unbeaten under new coach Jonelle Morley with the 111-80 win before the men opened their accounts for this NBL1 West season with the 113-98 victory.

WOMEN
Jasmin Fejo and Sydney Wright lit it up in their first home games with the East Perth Eagles, Stacey Barr led from the front and the end result was an ultra-impressive 111-80 victory over the Mandurah Magic.
Both teams were coming off impressive first up wins with the Eagles winning on the road to the Willetton Tigers and the Magic at home to the Rockingham Flames coming into the Saturday match up at Morley Sport and Recreation.
The Eagles set the tone early with 31 points and six three-pointers in the first quarter with four of those courtesy of Fejo and Wright before the lead ended up at 31 by the final buzzer in the home opener.
There was a lot to like in the performance from East Perth including shooting 51 per cent from the field with 13/30 from three-point territory and 18/27 at the foul line while pulling down 21 offensive rebounds for 27 second chance points.
Fejo ended up shooting 6/8 from three-point range for 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals with Wright also going 3/4 along with 9/10 at the charity stripe for 24 points and four assists.
Stacey Barr narrowly missed a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and three steals with Brooke Malone contributing 15 points and five boards, and Jade Williams eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
Jo Odude also had six points, five rebounds and three assists, Zaya Black five points, two boards and two assists, Aleka Kabugua two points, a rebound and an assist, Imogen Eames two points and a steal, and Ari van Vliet a point, a rebound and an assist.
The Magic ended up shooting just 37 per cent from the field with 7/29 from three but did go 27/30 at the free-throw line with Claire Jacobs finishing with 20 points and three assists, Mia Jacobs 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, Georgia Adams 14 points, and Sharn Hayward 12 points and five assists.
It's a new look Eagles team for 2026 with a new style under coach Morley and they wanted to put that on show for the home fans at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre first up on Saturday.
They did exactly that with 31 points in the first quarter on the back of going 6/10 from three-point territory including Jasmin Fejo and Sydney Wright a perfect 4/4 as they combined for 14 points.
The Eagles then managed to put up another 29 points in the second quarter to go into the half-time break with the 60-50 advantage over the Magic with the team shooting 51 per cent from the field and having pulled down 12 offensive rebounds.
Wright, Stacey Barr and Fejo also combined for 37 of those 60 points for the Eagles in what had been a tremendously entertaining first half showing.
They kept it going in the third quarter as well with another 27 points and Fejo hitting another couple of three-point bombs for 10 more points with the lead for East Perth out to 16 by three quarter-time.
The Eagles further dominated the last period with another 24 points to 10 while holding Mandurah to just 3/13 shooting on the way to the statement 27-point win against a team that won strongly themselves in the opening round.
MEN
David Okwera lit it up with 16 third quarter points on his way to 33 for the game with his Perth Wildcats teammate Lat Mayen also delivering first up as the East Perth Eagles beat the Mandurah Magic 113-98.
It was a first home game of the season at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre for the Eagles with Mayen on board to join his Wildcats NBL teammate Okwera to make his NBL1 West debut.
While East Perth were without Jonah Antonio who was on Australian Gangurrus 3x3 duties with Sharif Watson also injured, the Eagles came out ready to put on a show in the home opener.
The Magic did as well even without Michael Dupree and Matt Kenyon in their line-up with both teams combining for 64 points in the first quarter and 106 in the opening half.
East Perth ended up blowing the game open with 42 points in the third frame with 16 of those courtesy of Okwera before then resisting a late Magic charge to complete the 15-point win.
On the back of his 13 points in the first quarter and 16 in the third, Okwera finished the night with 33 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two blocks on a supremely efficient 12/13 shooting from the field, 2/2 from three-point range and 7/9 at the foul line.
His NBL26 Wildcats teammate Mayen was playing his first game in the NBL1 West as well after leading the West Adelaide Bearcats to an NBL1 Central championship in 2025. He had 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks first up in 30 minutes.
Lee Roberts also had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for East Perth, Max Rice 13 points, four assists and three boards, Nick Filpo 15 points and six assists, and Bing Huang 11 points and three assists.
After his 29 points on 28 shots last week against Rockingham, Lachlan Bertram finished with 32 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals this time around while shooting 10/19 from the floor, 3/10 from deep and 9/10 at the stripe for the Magic.
Jock Perry also ended up with 27 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in his second game with Mandurah.
Ryan Blanchett had 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals with Joel Gillett adding nine points and seven boards.
Both teams made a blistering start offensively in the first quarter combining for 64 points with the Eagles shooting 59 per cent from the field and the Magic 60 with East Perth narrowly leading 33-31 by quarter-time.
David Okwera and Lat Mayen had already combined for 22 points on 9/11 shooting in the first 10 minutes for the Eagles while Lachlan Bertram already had 16 for the Magic and Jock Perry 11 with them combining for 10/15 shooting.
The scoring rate couldn’t quite continue in the second quarter but things remained tight and by half-time scores were locked at 53-53.
By the break, Mayen and Okwera had 30 points on 12/17 shooting for East Perth while Perry and Bertram had delivered 38 on 15/23 for Mandurah.
It was in the third frame where the Eagles made their move and it was all on the back of Okwera who was proving unstoppable on the back of his best NBL season with the Perth Wildcats.
He scored 16 points on perfect 6/6 shooting for the quarter and the Eagles put up 42 points as a team on 16/20 shooting including going 5/6 from deep to end up leading by 20 at three quarter-time.
The Magic did keep on coming, though, and were rewarded by ramping up their pressure forcing East Perth into six last quarter turnovers, and when Ben Karlo scored with just over two minutes to play, it was just a nine-point game.
But East Perth answered with a tough three-point play from captain Lee Roberts and the Eagles went on to secure the 15-point win in their home opener for 2026.
