Young leader Riley Meldrum embracing role

It’s no surprise that Riley Meldrum at the age of 18 years was elevated to role of vice-captain for the 2020 NBL1 Woodville Warriors. He has been preparing for the responsibility all his junior career. Riley represented South Australia at junior national level six years in a row and honoured with the captaincy three times.
Riley started at Woodville as a 9 year old and was soon recognised as one of the best juniors to ever wear the green uniform, Riley was awarded the Warriors Most Promising Junior Boy award a record four times, other recipients include three time premiership player Cameron Wilson past Woodville NBL players Darren Ng and Tim Brenton.
As a junior Riley never considered changing clubs as is common now with some kids in the high performance system, he has however attracted the attention of rival NBL1 clubs only to stay true to the club he has called home for all of his basketball career.
Entering his fourth year in the senior program Riley was primed for a great year before COVID hit, slotting into the starting point guard role.
“Riley is Woodville, having him in a leadership role even at a young age has been an easy and natural transition, he fills the role really well and is a great support for club captain Alex Maiorana” “Some players have taken the last COVID season off and used it to have a break, Riley has used it to take his game to the next level” Scott Whitmore, Head Coach
Riley spends his days as and apprentice electrician, deciding not to head the US and take the college route. “I thought about heading over and was chatting to a few schools but decided it wasn’t for me and took up the career option instead”
“We had a great team last year, so it was a real shame COVID spoiled our chance, preseason went well, two great Americans and some good local recruits had us looking the best we have looked for a few years.” “I’m excited to see if we can get the group back to that mark for this year”
Riley will continue to be the last one to leave practice and the first one to put his hand up for the non-compulsory sessions, the Warrior supporters look forward to seeing Riley on the floor for the NBL1 season in 2021, we start with a home game vs Norwood on April 10th.
