FRIDAY

Perry Lakes Hawks (82) lost to East Perth Eagles (84)

Makenna Marisa made an immediate impact on debut for the Perry Lakes Hawks and her team made a late charge but the East Perth Eagles just managed to hold on for the 84-82 victory.

Marisa provided a significant boost for Friday night's match up at Bendat Basketball Centre as they tried to avoid a third straight loss up against an Eagles team having won six of eight games so far in 2026 and being on top of the defending champion Cockburn Cougars for three quarters last week.

Perry Lakes then managed to open up an eight-point lead and to still be on top by five at half-time and one at three quarter-time but then the Eagles took over.

East Perth went up by 10 themselves in the last term but then a late 7-0 Perry Lakes run had the margin two but neither team could execute down the stretch leaving the Eagles to hold on and win by two.

The victory improves East Perth to a 7-2 record on the season with a replacement for Jasmin Fejo still to arrive while Perry Lakes are now 2-7 but they will be looking forward to seeing what the duo of Marisa and Bridgette Rettstatt can deliver moving forward.

Brooke Malone made a hot start for East Perth to have 20 of her team's 43 points to half-time on her way to 23 in the game to go with six rebounds and two steals on 9/16 field goal shooting and 3/5 from three-point range which she already had by half-time.

Jade Williams also finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks for East Perth, Sarah Mortensen 15 points, 12 boards and six assists, Sydney Wright 17 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Stacey Barr seven points, 10 boards and seven assists despite 3/15 shooting.

It was an impressive debut from Makenna Marisa for Perry Lakes who played this past WNBL season for the Southside Melbourne Flyers before then heading straight to Germany where her season with Keltern only just wrapped up earlier this month.

So it's been quite the hectic schedule for the 24-year-old scoring guard out of Penn State but she wasted no time making an impact for the Hawks with 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists with 19 of her points up to three quarter-time.

Bridgette Rettstatt also had 17 points, 14 rebounds and two assists with Mila Wawszkowicz finishing with 12 points, four steals, two assists and two blocks, and Eva Smith 10 points and two steals.

Mandurah Magic (96) defeated Perth Redbacks (84)

Mikayla Pivec had another might impressive triple double and Sharn Hayward scored 32 points with eight three-pointers for the Mandurah Magic to beat the Perth Redbacks 96-84.

The Magic were back home at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre trying to return to the winner's list up against a Redbacks team also having lost their past three.

Mandurah made a strong start with a 13-0 run in the first quarter before leading 29-19 by quarter-time before another 36 points to 25 in the second frame to head into half-time leading 65-44.

The Redbacks did breathe life back into the contest with 33 points in the third quarter but then managed just seven in the fourth with Mandurah doing enough for the 12-point win to improve to a 5-4 record.

Sharn Hayward knocked down 8/12 from behind the three-point line for Mandurah on her way to 32 points to go with six assists.

Mikayla Pivec had her second triple double already in just five games for the Magic with 20 points, 14 rebound and 13 assists with 6/10 shooting from the field and 7/10 at the free-throw line.

Joondalup Wolves (104) defeated Willetton Tigers (62)

The Joondalup Wolves might have entered the round in last place but they were also one win from eighth place and showed what they are capable of with a commanding 104-62 home win over the Willetton Tigers.

The Wolfpack might have been last at 2-7 entering Round 9 but with the Eastern Suns in eighth place at 3-6, they remained within touch ahead of hosting the Tigers at Arena Joondalup.

Willetton were once again without Emma Gandini while the signing of Alex Fowler won't be eventuating with her now signing a WNBA deal, and the Wolves didn’t take long to get on top after a good Tigers start.

Willetton did lead by 11 early on but then Joondalup scores 14 straight points to be leading 24-21 by quarter-time and then went on with the job from there to take total control.

The Wolves put up 26 points to 14 in the second quarter to be leading 50-35 by half-time and then another 20 to 14 in the third frame, and 34 to 13 in the last on the way to the 42-point victory.

The Cougars hadn’t lost a game in the NBL1 West since the 2024 Grand Final until last Saturday night against the Warwick Senators when their 30-game streak came to an end.

They then had seven days to plot their revenge on the Hawks at Wally Hagan Stadium with Perry Lakes arriving following a tight loss to another top four team, the East Perth Eagles, on Friday.

The Cougars did end up leading 27-21 by quarter-time before turning that into the 53-44 advantage going into half-time.

It had all the hallmarks of one of the games of the season at Mike Barnett Sports Complex with Rockingham at home and having won five straight while Warwick had won three in-a-row.

That included the Senators ending the winning streak of the Cockburn Cougars stretching back to the 2024 Grand Final where ironically it was Rockingham they lost to.

It was a tight first half with Rockingham leading by a point at half-time with nothing more than five points separating the teams, but it was in the third frame where the Flames took charge.

Rockingham scored 27 points to 12 in the third quarter and 29 to 22 in the last to end up securing the 23-point victory that gives them six straight wins to improve them to a 9-2 record with the Senators now 7-4 following the defeat.
