With college experience and two NBL1 seasons under her belt, first recruit for the season Regan Turnour-McCarty brings a wealth of experience to her position on the 2023 Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants women’s team.
Turnour-McCarty started her basketball career with Brisbane’s Northside Wizards playing in the SBL and representing on the Queensland All-State team at the Australia National Championship in U16 and U18 divisions.
Jumping on the US college track in 2015, the 6’1 forward played two seasons at Eastern Arizona Community College and two seasons at Newberry College, South Carolina.
She averaged 9.5ppg and 4.5rpg across the two seasons played as an Eastern Arizona Monster and finished up her time as a Newberry Wolf averaging 11.6ppg and 6.6rpg.
Returning home from her four-year US stint, she played in the 2021 NBL1 North season for home club Northside Wizards and for Woodville Warriors in the 2022 NBL1 Central season.
Her current statistics sit at 12.9ppg, 6.1rpg, and 2.8apg as she heads into the 2023 season.
Joining the Goldfields Giants for the NBL1 West 2023 season, she said she is excited to head out west after visiting friend and 2022 Giants’ player Jesse Ghee during this year’s season.
“Initially, the reason I (visited) was to see Jesse, but I think once I got there, just seeing the environment, like a small town environment, and just how it is and how the West league is - I think that's what made me make my decision about signing,” she said.
She said she is excited about the road trips ahead, saying “in Adelaide, the furthest away game was about 40 minutes. I think it just adds to the whole experience, having to travel and do those road trips so I'm very excited for those”.
The newest recruit described herself as “versatile” and said she usually plays a shooting guard position.
On taking on a leadership role, she said she was one of the older team mates on the Woodside Warriors side so she can “definitely” see herself in the position.
“I was one of the older girls, more experienced girls so I sort of played that leadership role pretty well and I think I could do the same with the Giants,” she said.
Head coach Rob Thomson told the Kalgoorlie Miner: “Reg is a versatile player who can hold the point-guard through to a forward position and at 185cm is a good size”.
“She can shoot the ball from range, has a strong drive to the basket as we focus on lifting our scoring output next season and she will certainly help us with that”.
Turnour-McCarty marks the first of the Giants’ line up of signings for the upcoming season.
