Basketball Australia has announced the team of 12 players for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers to be held at the State Basketball Centre next week in Melbourne.
A trio of NBL1 players will represent Australia in the games held in Melbourne, with the Knox Radiers’ Mason Peatling and Mount Gambier Pioneers star Nick Marshall making their Boomers debut.
Marshall said the chance to represent his country on home soil was a dream come true.
“I got a phone call on Wednesday afternoon just asking for some details then Dean (Vickerman, Boomers coach for this window), sent me a text last night and said I was selected,” Marshall told the Adelaide 36ers.
“I just got up after I got that text and said, ‘let’s go’, I was so happy. I was waiting for a phone call, but I got a text message."
“He will call me today (Thursday) to go over some more details, my role, and stuff like that.”
They will also be joined by NBL and national team veteran Mitch McCarron who will suit up for the NBL1 Central West Adelaide Bearcats this coming season.
Jason Smith, former Boomers Captain and Director, Senior National Teams, said that this experience will help develop the up-and-coming stars of the Australian basketball landscape.
“These young athletes have been identified as potential Boomers of the future, we want to immerse them in our culture and give them access to our most experienced players,” Smith said.
“Developing our next generation of players is key to the ongoing success of our national teams.”
