NBL1 North champion AJ Johnson has re-signed for 2024.

The two-way threat averaged 16.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals for the conference champions.

They stepped up their role alongside MVP Courtney Woods to become an essential part of the Northside Wizards’ success throughout the NBL1 North this past season.

Championship coach Dwight Hicks said Johnson’s impact on the court brought the team together for their title success.

"AJ is an extremely valuable leader for our team on and off the court," he said.

"Their expertise and knowledge of the game strengthen the standards of everyone they play with. AJ brings a level of mentorship to our Northside Wizards Juniors and has a community-first mentality, which makes them a crowd favourite at the Cauldron and we can't wait to see what 2024 brings for this exceptionally talented athlete."

2023 NBL1 East All-Star Five member Ryan Beisty is set to return for 2024.

After averaging 14.7 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, the star big man will return to the Newcastle Falcons.

Since 2022, Beisty has been one of the consistent stars of the conference, leading the Falcons to the finals in both seasons.

Former teammate and now head coach Josh Morgan said that signing Besity was a priority for the club this offseason.

“We are very excited to have re-signed Ryan for the coming season. Coming off the back of two successful seasons for him personally, it was crucial for us to get that sorted,” Morgan said.

“Ryan offers so much to our group, at both ends of the floor. His versatility also gives us some flexibility with different line-ups, and he will no doubt help us strive to achieve what we want to achieve throughout the year.

“We’re very proud that he’s a Newcastle junior and he is walking proof that the effort you put into developing your game reaps rewards.”

Last season she averaged 13.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists for the Grand Finalist runners-up.

“It’s always hard when you get to Finals series and you don’t get over the line, It’s definitely still burning that’s for sure,” she said.

“There’s a lot to be proud of from that season, and as a group we’re all really proud.”

In the 2023 season, he took his trajectory to a new level, averaging 16.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists – earning a development player contract with Melbourne United as a result.

The captain of the Sabres led his team to the Grand Final, where he scored 28 points against the Knox Raiders in the eventual loss.

After a breakout season, Austin Shelley has re-signed with the Mount Gamber Pioneers for 2024.

The 21-year-old averaged 10.4 points, two assists and two rebounds for the NBL1 South Finals team last season.

Head Coach Richard Hill said he’s excited to bring back the young star.

“The winner of our most improved player award last season, his commitment to his game is second to none,” he said via the Pioneers

Missing last season with a knee reconstruction, Jaya Scafidi will feel like a new addition to the Cougars’ championship team going into 2024.

In 2022 she averaged nine points, four rebounds and two steals for Cockburn.

Last season she spent her time on the bench cheering on her team during their NBL1 West title run, leaving her healthy and ready to play for opening night early next year.

“The timing actually ended up working out pretty well for me in the sense that I probably could have tried to rush back to play late this season, but there just wasn’t a point and it didn’t feel like the right time,” Scafidi said.

“So I think it’s worked out the best way possible that I’ve had this extra couple of months to get it right and to be confident in it, and now to be able to hit the ground running in the pre-season.”
