The Nunawading Spectres opened their NBL1 South home campaign on Saturday night, falling narrowly to the Casey Cavaliers, 56-62, in a game that was a grind from start to finish.
It was the Spectres' third contest in just six days - an unrelenting start to the season that tested depth, discipline, and focus. While both teams found scoring difficult to come by, Nunawading’s effort on the defensive end remained a strong point, holding the Cavaliers well below their season average. But offensive inconsistencies continued to limit the home side’s ability to control the tempo.
Spectres Head Coach Paul Flynn offered a measured but pointed reflection postgame.
“You can’t expect to win games consistently if you don’t value the possessions you’re given,” Flynn said. “We’re doing the hard part - holding teams to numbers that should win you games. But basketball has a way of exposing the areas where you’re not sharp. Right now, we’re not sharp enough offensively.”
Nunawading generated quality looks for much of the night but struggled to convert, a theme that concerns the Spectres Coach.
“We’re getting to our spots. The structure is there. But there’s a difference between taking a shot and taking ownership of a moment,” Flynn continued. “Too often we’re passing up the opportunity to impose ourselves. And when you do that, the game doesn’t wait for you to figure it out.”
Despite the offensive woes, the Spectres remained in the contest until the final minutes, a testament to the team’s defensive resolve and toughness.
“There’s no shortage of grit in this group,” Flynn said. “But grit has to be paired with execution. It’s not about trying harder - it’s about being better in the moments that count. The scoreboard doesn’t care how much effort you gave if the details aren’t right.”
The Easter break comes at an opportune time for the Spectres, who will look to regroup ahead of a marquee ANZAC Round away/home double-header.
They’ll meet long-time rivals the Melbourne Tigers on Thursday 24 April before returning home to The Graveyard on Friday 25 April to host the Eltham Wildcats in what promises to be a fiery local clash.
