The Newcastle Falcons have announced signing of Saffron Shiels for the remainder of the 2026 NBL1 East season, in what will be an enormous addition to their already strong lineup.

Just last month, the Newcastle junior was selected by the Toronto Tempo with the 26th overall pick in the WNBA draft, an outstanding achievement that is reflective of the work she has put in. As a youngster, Shiels progressed through Newcastle Basketball’s local pathway, represented the Newcastle Hunters, and then earned a spot at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence.

Shiels has also spent three years in the system of the reigning WNBL champions the Townsville Fire, and will bring plenty of top-level experience to the Falcons, despite not being able to hit the court in WNBL26 due to injury.

Falcons Head Coach Bernadette Schmidt was full of pride and enthusiasm when speaking about what the signing of Shiels means for the side and the community.

“This is an incredibly exciting announcement for the Newcastle Falcons," Schmidt said.

"As a team, we’re thrilled to support [Saffron] as she continues her journey back to the court following an extended period of rehabilitation.

"This is a special opportunity for our local community to see 'Saff' play in her hometown as she continues to inspire the next generation of female athletes.

"Her achievements speak for themselves, but what truly stands out is the person she is. Saffron is a remarkable young woman who brings just as much impact off the court as she does on it.
