The Castec Rural Pioneers return to Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre this weekend for a crucial Round 13 double-header, taking on the Knox Raiders on Friday night before hosting the Bendigo Braves on Saturday.
With only two rounds remining in the regular season the Pioneers will be challenged by two teams with contrasting styles, beginning with one of the competition's premier outfits before backing up against a Bendigo side eager to keep its own finals hopes alive.
Opening the Weekend Against Knox
Friday night's contest presents a significant challenge as the Castec Rural Pioneers take on a Knox Raiders side sitting at 12-6 and boasting one of the league's most balanced line-ups.
Knox ranks among the NBL1 South's best offensive teams, averaging 98.7 points per game while shooting an impressive 48.7 per cent from the field. The Raiders also own a +5.8 rebounding margin and average almost 20 assists per game, highlighting their ability to move the basketball and create quality scoring opportunities.
The Raiders are led by American import Trazarien White, who is averaging 24.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting over 52 per cent from the field. He is complemented by Brandon Slater, who contributes 16.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest, while veteran guard Tad Dufelmeier directs the offence with 12.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists.
Knox also features tremendous frontcourt depth through Kobe Williamson, who averages a double-double with 14.2 points and 9.1 rebounds, while former NBL centre Jordan Hunter has provided a strong interior presence since joining the Raiders, averaging 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in his six appearances. Guards Brody Nunn and Igor Hadziomerovic round out an experienced perimeter rotation capable of stretching the floor.
The Castec Rural Pioneers will rely on one of the league's most dynamic offensive duos in Alex Mudronja and Deng Deng. Mudronja continues to lead Mount Gambier with 20.1 points and 3.6 assists per game, while Deng has made an immediate impact since joining the club, averaging 20.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals through his first five appearances.
The frontcourt pairing of Lucas Gordon and Titus Robinson has continued to provide energy around the basket. Gordon leads the competition in rebounding with 11.6 boards per game while adding 12.5 points and 1.7 blocks, while Robinson has averaged 16.8 points over his last five games, shooting over 61 per cent from the field.
The Pioneers will also look for valuable contributions from sharpshooter Ngor Manyang, who is averaging 14.2 points while knocking down 38.2 per cent from beyond the arc, alongside experienced guards Scott Telfer, Elijah Saifaleupolu, Micale Mee, Kane de Wit, and recent signing Cameron Brown.
Containing Knox's multiple scoring threats while matching their rebounding intensity will be critical if Mount Gambier is to secure an important Friday night victory.
Backing Up Against Bendigo
The challenge continues on Saturday when the Castec Rural Pioneers host the Bendigo Braves in another important fixture.
Although Bendigo enters the weekend with a 7-11 record, the Braves possess plenty of offensive firepower and remain capable of troubling any opponent on their day.
The Braves are led by Biwali Bayles, one of the competition's elite guards, averaging 25.2 points, 7.2 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game. Forward Jarvis Doles has also enjoyed an outstanding season, contributing 19.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest to provide Bendigo with a formidable inside-outside combination.
The frontcourt is further strengthened by experienced big men Ray Turner, who averages 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds, and Billy Smythe, who contributes 10.1 points while shooting nearly 57 per cent from the field. Bendigo has also received valuable production from Seth Anderson, averaging 9.8 points and shooting 36.6 per cent from three-point range.
While Bendigo averages just 85.3 points per game, the Braves rely heavily on Bayles' playmaking and Doles' versatility to generate offence. Limiting their transition opportunities and controlling the glass will be key for the Pioneers.
Mount Gambier will again look to its offensive leaders, with Mudronja and Deng providing the primary scoring punch, while Gordon's rebounding and Robinson's interior presence will be vital against Bendigo's physical frontcourt. Manyang's perimeter shooting and the depth provided by Telfer, Saifaleupolu, Mee, Kane de Wit and recent signing Cameron Brown will also be important as the Pioneers aim to maintain offensive balance across the weekend.
With two challenging home games against quality opposition, the Castec Rural Pioneers have an opportunity to close out the 2026 NBL1 South season strong.
