North Spotlight | Scott, Cann star in Logan win

Logan Thunder fought back from a 12-point deficit to make it eight straight NBL1 North wins beating the North Gold Coast Seahawks by seven on Sunday.

Logan Thunder had to fight back from being down 12 early in the second half to the North Gold Coast Seahawks to secure the 91-84 NBL1 North win with Leah Scott and Mikhaela Cann combining for 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Seahawks hosted the Thunder at Runaway Bay Indoor Stadium coming off winning their past two games to keep themselves in playoff contention while Logan were on a seven-game winning streak and in second position.

North Gold Coast then started impressively to lead by four points at quarter-time and 10 at half-time before going up 12 early in the third quarter.

Logan then outscored the Seahawks the rest of the way 51 points to 32 on the way to the seven-point win to make it eight on the trot to improve to a 10-1 record with North Gold Coast now slipping to 5-7.

Logan secured the eighth straight victory ending up shooting 48 per cent from the field to 38 from North Gold Coast and that was the major difference with the Seahawks getting up three extra shots and three more free throws while forcing the Thunder into 21 turnovers.

The Thunder scored the win to maintain their hold on second position with Leah Scott continuing to put herself in MVP calculations with 26 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Mikhaela Cann also had 24 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals while Prasayus Notoa contributed 10 points, 15 boards and five assists, Amandine Toi eight points and five assists, Mya Moke six points, and Maddy Allen five points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Seahawks might not have been able to quite complete a third straight win but they stay battled hard against one of the championship fancies with Georgia Woolley outstanding once more with 30 points, 11 rebounds and two steals with 12/12 foul shooting.

Katie Deeble added 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Maddison Baxter 12 points, three assists, three steals and two boards, and Antoniette Emma-Nnopu eight points, five assists and three rebounds.

The Seahawks were making their lone appearance of the weekend coming off winning their past two games while Logan arrived also on a seven-game winning run.

North Gold Coast made another strong start at home with Katie Deeble showing the way with another seven points in the firsts quarter and they were leading 26-22 by quarter-time.

The Seahawks were shooting 55 per cent to 44 from Logan in that first frame even though the Thunder got 12 points from Leah Scott.

North Gold Coast stayed in control in the second term too with another 24 points to 18 to open up a 50-40 advantage by half-time thanks to shooting 47 per cent to 43, and forcing the Thunder into 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

Logan then took over in the third quarter after staring down the end of their winning streak coming out of half-time and the Thunder put up 27 points to 13 to be leading 67-63 by three quarter-time.

In that third stanza, Logan shot 11/19 from the field with 4/8 from downtown while limiting the Seahawks 5/20 shooting and forcing the home team into six turnovers.

Logan then remained on top in the final quarter to end up leading by as much as 12 points and going on to hold on to the seven-point victory.

The Seahawks have another big test next when they host the Cairns Dolphins on Saturday night while Logan have a double header to come away to the South West Metro Pirates on Friday and at home to the Northside Wizards on Saturday.
