The NBL1 is partnering with Lifeline to launch the league’s inaugural Mental Health Round from June 25-27.
The round will emphasise the importance of mental health and wellbeing and outline that it is okay not to be okay.
Statement orange Lifeline socks will be worn during the inaugural Mental Health Round in NBL1 South and NBL1 West.
These socks are available online via the Basketball Victoria and Basketball WA shops for $10 a pair in Victoria and $12 in WA, with all profits going to Lifeline.
The NBL1 community will also be encouraged to donate to Lifeline by texting ‘NBL1’ to 0488 822 250 or scanning a dedicated QR code which will be available online and at venues around the country.
As always, the community can also donate to Lifeline online via lifeline.org.au.
Lifeline Australia is a non-profit organisation that provides free, 24-hour telephone crisis support services in Australia to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Each year, over one million Australians reach out to Lifeline for support and Lifeline’s crisis support line receives a call every 30 seconds.
NBL1 General Manager Dean Anglin urged all players, coaches and clubs to get on board with this initiative in 2021 and be involved with something that is set to make history.
“It’s exciting to unite all of our NBL1 conferences on the same weekend for such an important cause,” Anglin said.
“The global pandemic has had devastating effects on many people so raising awareness and support for mental health is now more important than ever.
“The NBL1 understands that mental health does not discriminate and aims to emphasise the importance of reaching out for help and prioritising your wellbeing during this round and beyond.
“We want everyone in the NBL1 community to know that it’s okay not to be okay."
Lisa Cheng, Executive Director of Fundraising and Marketing, Lifeline Australia echoed Anglin’s sentiments.
“We are proud to be the beneficiary of the very first mental health round in the NBL1,” Cheng said.
“Every pair of socks sold, or donation received allows Lifeline to be there for every person experiencing distress, particularly in these times of increasing anxiety and isolation.
“At Lifeline, we know that through connecting with others, we find hope.
“We encourage players and fans to take a moment to check in with one another as we know the simple act of reaching out can save a life.
“Thank you for your amazing support.”
