Match Report: Third-Quarter Surge Lifts Frankston Over Chargers Men in Tight Contest
The Hobart Chargers were left to rue a costly third quarter on Saturday night, falling 106-102 to the Frankston Blues at Jubilee Park Stadium in their Round 10 NBL1 South Men’s clash.
After leading at both quarter time and halftime, the Chargers were unable to withstand a decisive Frankston surge in the third term, with the Blues doing just enough late to hold on in a high-scoring finish.
Hobart started the stronger of the two sides, finding early rhythm through Anthony Drmic, Jacob Richards and Luke Rosendale. The Chargers moved the ball well and were efficient offensively, edging Frankston 27-23 in the opening quarter to take a four-point lead into the first break.
The visitors carried that momentum into the second term, continuing to score effectively despite Frankston staying within striking distance. Jackson Pepper provided an important spark off the bench, while Richards and Drmic remained influential as Hobart outscored the Blues 28-27 for the quarter to take a 55-50 lead into halftime.
The game turned in the third quarter as Frankston lifted its physicality and offensive output. The Blues piled on 34 points for the term, with Tom Garrett catching fire from long range and Dibaji Walker, Jeremy Combs and Kynan Philippe all making important contributions. Hobart struggled to contain Frankston’s scoring burst and, despite continued resistance from Drmic and Rosendale, were outscored 34-23 for the quarter to trail 84-78 heading into the final period.
To their credit, the Chargers continued to fight in the fourth quarter and threatened to steal the result late. Hobart narrowed the deficit to a single point inside the final minute, but Frankston responded with timely baskets and crucial free throws to close out the 106-102 victory.
Anthony Drmic was outstanding for the Chargers with 24 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in a superb all-round performance. Luke Rosendale added 22 points, while Jacob Richards contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Joe Chilcott also gave Hobart strong support with 14 points, and Nicholas Paul finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Frankston’s scoring was led by a balanced team performance, with Tom Garrett finishing with 17 points, Dibaji Walker adding 16, and Jeremy Combs contributing 15. Daniel Trist scored 14, while Austin Shelley recorded 13 points and six assists as the Blues found multiple contributors when it mattered most.
The result was a frustrating one for the Chargers, who controlled much of the first half and pushed the Blues all the way in the closing stages, but ultimately could not overcome Frankston’s decisive third-quarter run on the road.
