The Hobart Chargers produced a commanding second-half performance on Saturday night, defeating the Bendigo Braves 104-79 at Hutchins School in their Round 5 NBL1 South Men’s clash.
After a tightly contested opening quarter, the Chargers steadily asserted control through balanced scoring, strong interior presence and improved defensive pressure, pulling away decisively over the final two periods to secure a convincing home win.
Bendigo made the sharper start, finding early scoring through Biwali Bayles and Jarvis Doles to edge the opening term 22-18. Hobart worked into the contest through strong defensive rotations and interior scoring, with Jacob Richards and Xavier Clarke providing stability as the Chargers remained within touch despite Bendigo’s early momentum.
The home side responded strongly in the second quarter. Luke Rosendale began to heat up offensively, while Richards controlled the glass and Ambros Eugster and Joe Chilcott provided energy on both ends. Hobart lifted their efficiency and defensive activity, holding Bendigo to just 15 points for the quarter as the Chargers claimed a 23-15 term to take a 41-37 lead into the main break.
Hobart emerged from halftime with renewed intent and quickly took control of the contest. Rosendale continued his outstanding night, scoring from all three levels, while Richards dominated the paint and Clarke finished strongly in transition. The Chargers’ defensive pressure forced turnovers and limited Bendigo’s shot quality, allowing Hobart to stretch the margin by winning the third quarter 31-23 to lead 72-60 at three-quarter time.
The final quarter confirmed the Chargers’ dominance. Hobart maintained their offensive rhythm and defensive identity, continuing to generate high-percentage looks and control the boards. Rosendale remained unstoppable, while Richards’ interior presence and passing continued to create opportunities for teammates. The Chargers poured on 32 points in the final term, limiting Bendigo to 19 and closing out the contest comfortably at 104-79.
Luke Rosendale led all scorers with a standout performance, finishing with 39 points on efficient shooting and converting 13 of 14 free throws. Jacob Richards delivered a powerful all-round display with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Xavier Clarke added 14 points on strong finishing. Richards, Clarke and Rosendale each contributed three assists in a well-balanced team effort.
For Bendigo, Biwali Bayles finished with 30 points and was the primary scoring threat throughout the night. Jarvis Doles added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Olivia Pollerd’s counterpart Jordan Straatsma and Jake Lloyd chipped in across multiple areas, but the Braves were unable to match Hobart’s depth and consistency after halftime.
The victory completes a successful Round 5 double-header for the Chargers at home, with the men’s side producing one of their most complete performances of the season as they continue to build momentum in the NBL1 South campaign.
