The Ballarat Miners have appointed Luke Cann as Head Coach of their NBL1 South Men's program for the 2027 season.
Cann joins Ballarat with coaching experience across the NBL, NBL1 North and Australian national team programs, having most recently held Assistant Coach positions with the Adelaide 36ers and Brisbane Bullets.
During his time with Adelaide, the 36ers finished second in the NBL regular season and reached the Grand Final. As the club's lead offensive assistant, Cann contributed to an offence that ranked third in the competition.
Prior to Adelaide, Cann served as an Assistant Coach with the Brisbane Bullets, while also holding the position of Head Coach of the Logan Thunder Men's program in NBL1 North.
Across nine seasons with Logan, Cann guided the Thunder to seven consecutive finals appearances and received two NBL1 North Coach of the Year awards.
Cann has also held several roles within Basketball Australia's national team programs. He currently serves as Head Coach of the Australian Under 15 Men's National Team, having previously worked as an Assistant Coach with the Under 17 Men's program, including at the FIBA U16 Asia Championship and FIBA U17 World Cup.
Cann said he was looking forward to taking on the role at Ballarat.
"Ballarat has a rich basketball history and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality programs and opportunities for its community. It's a privilege to join the Miners and help build on that tradition," Cann said.
"I'm excited by the opportunity to build a genuine contender with a strong local identity—a team that competes with toughness, plays together and represents Ballarat in a way our community can be proud of."
Basketball Ballarat CEO Travis Merlo said Cann's approach to player development and building a locally focused program were important factors in his appointment.
"From the second I first spoke to Luke, I knew he was the right Coach for the Ballarat Miners," Merlo said.
"He has a focus on building a local-first program, and a desire to win and develop athletes to be the best they can be. We can't wait for Luke to arrive and start building for 2027."
Cann will lead the Miners into the 2027 NBL1 South season as the club prepares for its next campaign.
