Basketball WA is pleased to announce the Geraldton Buccaneers are a step closer to an NBL1 Womens’ Team for the 2027 NBL1 West season.

The Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association have worked hard and committed in principle, setting in motion interim preparations for the women’s team to be ready to tip-off in season 2027.

An interim coach will be announced in the coming days and trials are scheduled to commence in the next few weeks, as the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association continue to do everything they can to support the development of a strong and viable women’s team under the banner: “One Club, Two Teams.”

Basketball WA Chief Executive Officer Fabian Ross, commended the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association for their huge effort in bringing the women’s team to fruition.

“It’s incredibly exciting for the Geraldton basketball community that women will now have the opportunity to not only represent the region in the NBL1 competition but do so from the place in which they have grown up and reside.” Ross said.

“Basketball WA is committed to support the GABA in providing that pathway for women in the region to reach their high performance goals and next level aspirations.”

An NBL1 Buccaneers womens team in 2027 would mean every NBL1 club across the country has both a mens and womens team competing for championships.

Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association Vice President Natasha Harradine praised the local community for its support of a women’s Geraldton Buccaneers team.

“We are working hard to ensure there are foundations laid for the long term viability and success of a Geraldton Buccaneers womens team” Harradine said.

“We not only want both male and female players and coaches to come to Geraldton and find a home within our community, as so many NBL1 players have done before, but we also want to ensuregenerations of locals are able to participate in basketball from domestic, to state championships, to high performance, and NBL1, while living in the town they love with family support around them.”

Recruiting for team officials, including coaches and team management, will continue as GABA look to shape the future of women’s basketball in the Mid West.
