David Herbert appointed Miners Head Coach

The Ballarat Miners have appointed David Herbert as Head Coach of their NBL1 Women’s team.

Herbert returns to the Miners program after previously coaching the side in 2022, bringing more than 25 years of experience across Australian basketball.

His coaching background includes roles at NBL1 and WNBL level, National Junior Championships and with Australian national teams. Herbert has also worked within the Basketball Australia pathway, including as Head Coach of the Australian Gems.

Basketball Ballarat CEO Travis Merlo said Herbert’s experience and commitment to the broader women’s program made him an ideal appointment.

“We are thrilled to welcome back David ‘Herbie’ Herbert as our NBL1 Women’s Head Coach,” Merlo said.

“Herbie’s track record at the highest levels of the game, including his work within the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence and as Head Coach of the Australian Gems, demonstrates his ability to develop winning teams and world class athletes.

“What excites us most is his commitment to working across our entire women’s program, from juniors through to NBL1, to invest in the growth of our players and coaches and to strengthen our elite pathway here in Ballarat.”

Alongside leading the Miners’ NBL1 Women’s program, Herbert will contribute to Ballarat Basketball’s wider women’s pathway, supporting the development of players and coaches.

“I’m extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to Ballarat Basketball and lead the NBL1 Women’s program,” Herbert said.

“Ballarat has a proud basketball history and a strong sense of community. What really excites me about this role is the opportunity to build something that extends beyond the NBL1 team and create an environment where our players and coaches can develop.

“We want to build a team that competes with a clear identity, plays for each other and represents Ballarat in the right way. I’m looking forward to working with everyone at the club and building something we can all be proud of.”
