The Castec Rural Pioneers have continued their commitment to developing local talent, with Mount Gambier guard Taj Brumby signing with the club for the 2026 NBL1 South season.
Brumby is a familiar face within the Pioneers program, having progressed through the local basketball pathway in Mount Gambier and previously being part of the club’s development player program. The opportunity allowed him to train alongside senior NBL1 athletes and gain valuable experience within the Pioneers environment.
A dynamic guard, Brumby has continued to develop his game within the Limestone Coast basketball community, competing in local competitions and representative pathways while building his experience around the Pioneers program.
Brumby has also shown strong form in local competitions, including standout performances in Mount Gambier basketball where he played a key role in team success and was recognised for his individual performances during the season.
The signing highlights the Pioneers’ continued focus on providing opportunities for emerging local players to develop and contribute within the NBL1 South program.
Pioneers Club President Tom Kosch said Brumby’s signing was a reflection of the opportunity that NBL1 semi professional programs provide young athletes.
Tom said it has been rewarding to watch the growth of Brumby grow through the Mount Gambier basketball community and develop within both the Pioneers, CBL and and local SECBL competitions over a number of years.
“Taj is a great example of what the opportunity is for young aspiring basketballers in our region.”
“We’ve seen him come through the local system, he has stuck at it and work hard on his game and continue to improve each year.”
“It’s really special for the club to have another up and coming local player represent the Pioneers at this level.”
“We’re proud of the progress Taj has made to date and excited to see him continue that journey again with us in 2026.” he added.
Brumby said he was grateful for the opportunity to represent his hometown club and continue developing his game and it was a special opportunity to be part of the Pioneers program and to continue learning within the team environment.
“I am thrilled and grateful to be continuing my opportunity with the Pioneers in 2026. Basketball is something I continue to work toward daily and I am looking forward to developing my game further during the season.”
“The opportunity to learn and be guided by my teammates and coaches, and having exposure to other teams is really exciting.” he added.
With pre-season preparations approaching, the Castec Rural Pioneers continue to build excitement ahead of the 2026 NBL1 South season, with the squad coming together as the countdown to tip-off at Wulanda Recreation & Convention Centre draws closer.
