Match Report: Chargers Finish Strong to Secure Road Win Over Pioneers
The Hobart Chargers produced a composed final-quarter performance to secure an 82-78 victory over the Mt Gambier Pioneers on Friday night at Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre in their Round 6 NBL1 South Women’s clash.
After trailing for much of the contest, the Chargers lifted their defensive pressure and executed calmly down the stretch to overturn a narrow deficit and complete a hard-fought road win.
Mt Gambier made the stronger start, capitalising on efficient inside scoring and early momentum through Lara Edmanson and Abigail Prohaska. Hobart found scoring through Tishara Morehouse and Sharna Thompson, but the Pioneers controlled much of the first quarter to take a 23-17 lead at the first break.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Mt Gambier maintaining their advantage through consistent scoring and strong work on the glass. Edmanson continued to be a focal point offensively, while Ti’ian Boler added valuable contributions. Hobart responded through Thompson’s perimeter shooting and Morehouse’s attacking play, but despite winning periods of the quarter, the Chargers trailed 46-39 at halftime.
Hobart began to shift momentum in the third quarter. Morehouse and Singleton provided key scoring inside, while Thompson delivered timely baskets from the perimeter. The Chargers lifted their efficiency and defensive effort, cutting into the margin by winning the quarter 22-19 to reduce the deficit to 65-61 heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter proved decisive. Hobart maintained their composure in a tight finish, steadily applying pressure at both ends of the floor. Morehouse continued to attack the basket, Thompson provided important scoring, and Singleton controlled the glass. The Chargers outscored Mt Gambier 21-13 in the final term, taking the lead late and closing out the contest from the free-throw line to secure the 82-78 victory.
Tishara Morehouse led Hobart with 26 points and six rebounds, consistently creating scoring opportunities throughout the contest. Sharna Thompson added 24 points, including six three-pointers, while Tyia Singleton produced a dominant interior performance with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Emerson Wells contributed 9 points, and Chloe Broomhall added seven rebounds and five assists.
For Mt Gambier, Lara Edmanson delivered an outstanding performance with 29 points and 11 rebounds, supported by Ti’ian Boler’s 17 points and Eva Langton’s 14. Despite their strong start, the Pioneers were unable to maintain their advantage under Hobart’s late defensive pressure.
The result marks an important road win for the Chargers, who showed resilience to overcome an early deficit and execute strongly in the closing stages to continue their positive run in the NBL1 South season.
Match Report: Chargers Outmatched by Dominant Thunder on the Road
The Hobart Chargers were unable to match a dominant Keilor Thunder outfit on Sunday afternoon, falling 97-52 at Keilor Stadium in their Round 6 NBL1 South Women’s clash.
Keilor controlled the contest from the outset, building a significant early advantage with efficient scoring and defensive pressure before extending the margin across the first three quarters to secure a comprehensive home victory.
The Thunder made a fast start, capitalising on early turnovers and converting at a high rate through Isabelle Bourne and Maddison Rocci. Hobart struggled to generate consistent offence, with Keilor racing to a commanding 31-13 lead at the first break.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Keilor maintaining their control through strong ball movement and inside scoring. Rocci’s playmaking and Bourne’s offensive presence continued to trouble the Chargers, while Hobart found limited scoring opportunities despite efforts from Portia Chopping and Sharna Thompson. The Thunder extended their lead to 56-26 at halftime after another decisive quarter.
Keilor continued their dominance in the third period, producing their strongest quarter of the game. Bourne led the charge with efficient scoring, supported by Wightman and Tess Heal, as the home side pushed the margin further beyond reach. Hobart were held to just six points for the quarter, with the Thunder taking an 88-32 lead into the final break.
The final quarter saw Hobart produce an improved offensive showing, outscoring Keilor 20-9, but the result was already decided. The Chargers showed some late fight through Chopping and Taya Stevenson, however the earlier deficit proved too great to overcome as Keilor closed out the game 97-52.
Isabelle Bourne was outstanding for Keilor with a dominant double-double of 31 points and 12 rebounds, while Maddison Rocci controlled the game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Isobelle Wightman added 13 points, and Tess Heal contributed 11 in a well-balanced team performance.
For Hobart, Portia Chopping led the scoring with 10 points, while Sharna Thompson, Tishara Morehouse and Taya Stevenson each added nine. Chloe Broomhall provided a strong presence on the boards with 12 rebounds, but the Chargers were unable to find offensive consistency against Keilor’s defensive pressure.
The result sees the Chargers conclude a tough road trip, with Keilor’s early dominance and sustained control proving decisive throughout the contest.
