US import Rachel Kehoe brings stature to the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants women’s side as Head Coach Rob Thomson rounds out his team.

Kehoe, a 196cm centre, brings a wealth of experience to the club in her first season in the Australian league.

“I played my first two years at St. Clair County Community College and then another two years at Eastern Michigan University,” she said.

“After that, I played five years in Europe, and then last year I played for Teporacas de Chihuahua in Mexico.

“I've been wanting to come over to Australia for a few years now, but I've never had the opportunity because either the league I was playing in, our season went too long into the Australian season or you know, we had COVID for a couple of years, which kind of shut everything down.”

Head coach Thomson said Kehoe will provide the team with “a huge presence in the middle at 6’5” in height”.

“Rachel comes to the Giants with plenty of experience. She played for Michigan in the NCAA and has been all over the world including Spain, Germany, Denmark and Mexico,” he said.

"Rachel will help us at both ends of the floor but particularly with our defensive presence.

“We wanted a player that could alter shots, block some shots and just to be the physical presence inside the keyway, which we lacked a little bit last season.

“Rachel will be a solid post player in this league and will be tough to stop.”

Kehoe said she likes to play around the basket and mid-range regions of the court.

“That's probably what I’ve played most of my game,” she said.

"I like to also play in transition, I'm one of those players where defenses are super important to me.

“The team mindset has got to really focus on that end as well.”

When asked if she thought she could acclimatise to the Goldfields, Kehoe said she felt her time in Mexico had prepared her.

“(Kalgoorlie is) definitely different from Michigan but last year I was in Mexico and the part of Mexico I was at is pretty much a desert so in a way I feel like it's going to feel somewhat like that,” she said.

Kehoe’s college and European experience will be invaluable to the relatively young women’s squad.

“I've played on teams before where they have younger players on the team and right now I'm helping coach one of the teams that I used to play for, which has been a really cool experience,” she said.

“I think with that, I'm sure it's a role that I can fill if it happens that way.

“I'm sure that also though they'll be teaching me a lot of things too. I mean, not just about Australia, but how they play the game.

“I'm excited to get there and kind of gel with the team and then learn how to play with them.”

Kehoe will look to join preseason training in about three weeks time ahead of the NBL1 West season starter on April 1.
