West Finals | Deegan, Wolfpack sink Magic

Rosie Deegan set the tone early and then helped slam the door on the Mandurah Magic's 2026 NBL1 West season with the Joondalup Wolves hitting the road to open the finals on Friday night with the 90-81 victory.

The Magic finished the regular season in fifth position and were just one game short of a top four finish but earned the right to host the elimination final at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

The Wolfpack just managed to sneak into the playoffs from eighth position having won their last two games, but with the talent and experience in their roster, they were always going to be more dangerous than your usual No. 8 seed.

It was a tight battle through the first quarter with Joondalup leading 22-19 by quarter-time with Deegan hitting a couple of threes for the visitors while Claire Jacobs was already up to nine points for the home team.

Both teams struggled to get much going in the second quarter with just the combined 26 points with Mandurah adding 15 points on 6/21 shooting but they did go 3/11 from deep opposed to the 5/20 overall and 1/8 from the outside from the Wolves who had just 11 points.

That saw the Magic take the narrow 34-33 lead going into half-time with Claire and Mia Jacobs combining for 24 points.

Joondalup took over in the third quarter with 28 points on 8/17 shooting while landing 4/8 from the outside with Ella Thornton-Elliott showing the way.

That saw the Wolfpack go into three quarter-time leading 61-52 despite the Magic pulling down 21 offensive rebounds and getting up an extra 11 shot attempts, but going 25 per cent from the field was proving fatal.

Mandurah did get back within six early in the fourth quarter when Mia Jacobs hit a three ball but the Wolves responded firstly with a layup to Awatea Leach before Deegan landed another bomb from downtown.

Leach then scored again to push the Wolves out to a 13-point lead and they wouldn’t be headed from there to go on to advance their season and end that of the Magic with the nine-point victory.

Mandurah did get up a monstrous 25 more shots for the game than Joondalup on the back of 30 offensive rebounds, but their shot eluded them going 29 per cent from the field with 11/38 from the outside.

Joondalup were significantly more efficient with shooting at 44 per cent with 11/30 from the outside and 17/27 from the foul like while doing it without any impact from Yemiyah Morris who fouled out in 10:36 and had no impact when she was out there with four points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Wolfpack now will look ahead to a Thursday night local derby with the Warwick Senators on Thursday night in the semi finals with Rosie Deegan outstanding with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals with 4/10 three-point shooting.

Asianae Johnson also had 16 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Wolves, Kim Pierre-Louis 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Awatea Leach 11 points, five boards, three assists and three steals.

Ella Thornton-Elliott also had 10 points on 3/6 three-point shooting with her third quarter cameo with Rui Mima making up for the lack of impact from Morris to play over 22 minutes for six points and five rebounds.

A season that promised so much for Mandurah is now over with Mia Jacobs finishing with 24 points and 20 rebounds with older sister Claire having 22 points, five boards and four steals. But they did combine to shoot 14/51 from the field and 8/25 from the outside.

Jade Gowland added 13 points and 12 rebounds with Mikayla Pivec delivering yet another triple double after being named to the All-First Team for 15 assists, 12 rebounds and 10 points.
