Wayment the way forward as Giants sign their inaugural women's player

Fresh of the signing on signing inaugural coach Robert Thomson, who helped spearhead the push of the team into the elite level, the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants have been quick to start assembling their inaugural women’s team for NBL1 2022 with the signing of American recruit Amanda Wayment.

Wayment joins the Giants after two seasons playing for the Auckland Dream in the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL) and a four year college career at the highly recognised NCAA Division 1 school Brigham Young University in Utah.

At 185cm (6’1”), the forward/centre will be one of the centrepieces of the team as they advance into the NBL1 level after competing in the SBL Division 1/WABL Championship competitions for just three seasons.

Able to contribute at both ends of the court, Wayment brings an all-round game with her for the Giants to build around, providing scoring, rebounding, interior defence and shot blocking, and she is relishing the opportunity to lead the Giants into their maiden NBL1 Women’s season.

“I want a physical and fast game that I’m used to in the United States. Being an older teammate coming in, I hope that my role is to lead  and provide consistency to a group of young girls.” Wayment told the Kalgoorlie Miner newspaper about her recent signing.
“I am a positive person and want that to help us get through tough times throughout the season.”

Giants coach Robert Thomson spoke highly of Wayment and their reason to sign her for the 2022 season.

“Amanda will bring to us a physical inside presence, a great back to the basket player who can finish with either hand.” Thomson said.
“She has a high basketball IQ, a fantastic work ethic both on and off the court, and will be a great role model for our young team, setting the standard as to what is expected as we move into the NBL1 competition.”
“More importantly, she’s a high quality person and we’re excited to bring her to the Goldfields region to help spearhead our program and basketball in general.”

Wayment is due to arrive in Kalgoorlie in February after the completion of her New Zealand season.
