The East Perth Eagles women's basketball team is soaring to new heights under the leadership of their new head coach, Tim Symons. With an inspiring journey from player to coach, Tim has proven himself to be a dedicated leader whose philosophy emphasizes teamwork, respect, and personal growth. Let's delve into the story of Tim Symons and his vision for the Eagles.

A Journey of Passion and Experience

Tim Symons' journey to becoming the head coach of the East Perth Eagles women's team is a testament to his lifelong dedication to basketball. Starting at the age of five on the outdoor bitumen courts in Northam, Tim's love for the game has only grown stronger over the years. His path has been marked by transitions from player to coach, with significant contributions at various clubs including Kalamunda and Swan City Mustangs at the WABL level. His extensive experience spans coaching junior teams from under-12s to under-20s, as well as leading roles in D League and SBL men's and women's teams.

Tim's coaching journey has been shaped by the influence of notable figures such as Adam Forde, whose hard-line values and team culture resonate deeply with him. However, it was his father, Tim's greatest mentor, who instilled in him the values of sportsmanship and a competitive spirit. As Tim puts it, "Players' growth motivated me to pursue coaching, but the influencers on my journey as a coach have grown; you need a network and be prepared to listen."

Coaching Philosophy and Team Dynamics

Tim Symons describes his coaching style as collaborative, disciplinary, and adaptable. He focuses on creating a supportive yet challenging environment for players, where core values such as teamwork, respect, hard work, and effort are paramount. By prioritizing individual goals within the team context, Tim ensures that personal development aligns seamlessly with team objectives.

Building team chemistry is a cornerstone of Tim's strategy. He employs team-building exercises and open dialogues to foster relationships and enhance communication among players. When conflicts arise, Tim addresses them through open dialogue, encouraging players to communicate and understand each other’s perspectives. His approach to conflict resolution is as straightforward as it is effective, emphasizing the importance of addressing behaviours that need attention.

Game Strategy and Continuous Improvement

Preparation is key for Tim Symons when it comes to important games. As well as analysing opponents, he ensures that the team is physically and mentally ready. His in-game decision-making is quick and concise, considering game conditions and player performance, allowing for necessary adjustments to optimize strategy.

Tim believes in learning from both wins and losses. Post-game analysis, video reviews, and team discussions are integral to identifying areas for improvement and reinforcing strengths. As Tim notes, "Losses are okay, it teaches you resilience but also shows how teams come back together."

Future Aspirations and Community Engagement

Looking ahead, Tim's goals for the East Perth Eagles women's team include achieving success through a growth mindset and fostering a cohesive team culture. He strives to create an environment where both junior and senior players view East Perth as the club of choice, prioritizing inclusion, player development, and competitive success.

Engaging with the community and fans is crucial for Tim, as he believes in building relationships through events and outreach programs. Collaboration with coaches and staff is also integral to his success, creating a supportive environment that benefits both the team and the local community.

Handling Players Struggling with Motivation or Confidence

When faced with a player who struggles with motivation or confidence, Tim Symons adopts a compassionate and supportive approach. He recognizes that these challenges can affect both senior and junior players and believes in helping them rediscover their passion for the game while building their self-confidence.

To address these struggles, Tim focuses on helping players develop self-efficacy, empowering them to say, "I don't get it," and work together to find solutions through flexible learning methods. By ensuring that each player feels supported and understood, Tim instils a culture where open communication is encouraged, and players are motivated to speak up about their difficulties.

Ultimately, Tim's approach is about nurturing a supportive team environment, where players are reminded that everyone struggles at times, and it's perfectly okay to seek help and guidance. This not only bolsters their confidence but also reinforces the team's unity and resilience, allowing them to thrive both individually and collectively.

Identifying and Nurturing Young Talent

When it comes to identifying and nurturing young talent, Tim Symons employs a comprehensive approach that combines scouting, performance evaluation, and collaboration with other coaches. His strategy focuses on providing development programs that are tailored to meet each player's unique needs. "We have been at the conditioning since October," Tim explains, emphasizing the intensive preparation involved.

Tim believes in integrating juniors, from under-16s through to under-20s, into the team's development journey. This process, while challenging, has been met with enthusiastic participation and commitment from the young players. "It's been a tough ride, but the buy-in is great," remarks Tim, highlighting the dedication and potential of the upcoming talent under his guidance. Through this structured pathway, Tim ensures that young athletes are not only physically prepared but also mentally equipped to succeed at higher levels of competition.

Goals for the Team This Season and Beyond

When asked about his goals for the team this season and beyond, Tim Symons emphasizes a holistic approach centered around both performance and team culture. "My goals include achieving success through a growth mindset," Tim explains, acknowledging the challenges posed by the numerous changes from previous years. While win/loss ratios are important for the success of the club, Tim believes that the cohesiveness of the group is paramount. "Being prepared to go to war for one another is about WE, not ME," he asserts, highlighting the importance of unity and teamwork.

Tim's aspirations extend beyond immediate success; he is committed to continuing the team's growth and fostering a positive team culture. By prioritizing these values, Tim ensures that the East Perth Eagles are not only competitive but also embody a supportive and inclusive environment, where players are encouraged to thrive both individually and collectively. Under his leadership, the Eagles are poised to achieve their goals and build a legacy of excellence.

In Tim Symons, the East Perth Eagles have a head coach who not only brings a wealth of experience and knowledge but also a passion for mentoring and developing players, both on and off the court. Under his leadership, the Eagles are poised to soar to new heights, with a vision that encompasses growth, success, and community involvement.

We look forward to watching the Eagles Women soar in 2025 as they will play their first season game against the Rockingham Flames on their home court at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre on the 4th of April.
