Tasmanian Star Jacob Richards Claims NBL1 South MVP

The Hobart Chargers captain added the league's highest individual honour to an already outstanding campaign after averaging 24.95 points, 7.95 rebounds and 4.41 assists per game.

Richards also finished as the competition's Leading Scorer and earned selection in the All-NBL1 South First Team, leading one of the league's most potent offences alongside Luke Rosendale and Anthony Drmic.

The MVP carries extra significance for the Tasmanian product, who has spent his basketball journey representing his hometown club.

Speaking during his acceptance speech, Richards reflected on what the award meant.

"I've been going to the games since I was a kid. I consider myself a Hobart Charger through and through, and to win this award for the club is really special to me."

Already one of Tasmania's brightest basketball talents, Richards continued his rise during the NBL season, earning a roster opportunity with the Tasmania JackJumpers after progressing through the club's development program.

That experience translated into another dominant NBL1 South campaign. Richards ranked among the conference's elite in scoring, rebounding and playmaking while helping guide the Chargers into the postseason, cementing himself as one of the competition's premier all-round players.

Reflecting on Hobart's season during his acceptance speech, Richards said the chemistry shared between himself, Rosendale and Drmic made the campaign one to remember.

"It was really fun. We had a high-powered offence. Every night we came out firing."

Richards also took time to thank those who helped him reach the milestone.

"Thank you to my teammates. It's been a hell of a year. Our coaches have been incredible, and to my parents, thank you very much."

Before turning his attention back to basketball, however, Richards admitted one thing is at the top of his offseason plans.

"I'm trying to go on a holiday. It's been a long season, so I think a bit of rest would be good."

After another standout campaign, Richards now adds NBL1 South MVP to an already impressive résumé. From starring for his hometown Chargers to earning opportunities in the NBL, the Tasmanian continues to establish himself as one of Australian basketball's rising stars.
