Success for our Junior Miners in Bendigo
15 Junior Ballarat Miners teams travelled to the Bendigo over the weekend for the annual Bendigo Classic tournament. Despite the limited preparations due to the timing of the tournament, all the Ballarat Miners teams enjoyed some success over the weekend.

15 Junior Ballarat Miners teams travelled to Bendigo over the weekend for the annual Bendigo Classic tournament. Despite the limited preparations due to the timing of the tournament, Ballarat Miners teams enjoyed plenty of success over the weekend.
Elite Teams Chair Cameron Moore said, “Ballarat Miners came away with four Championship Division grand final wins and three runners up with another two teams making it into the finals. Whilst not all teams made finals, each team showed growth and took away some real positives leading into the VJBL competition and future tournaments”.
Moore added, “There was a great sense of one club over the weekend with players, coaching staff and parents supporting other teams when they had breaks from their own games”.
The four championship winning teams were under 14 Boys (1), under 16 Girls (1), under 18 Boys (1) and under 18 Girls.
Under 18 Miners Girls, Head Coach Daniel Knaggs said, “We had a great tournament, each game the girls got better as a team and culminated in the grand final win”.
Knaggs added, “The final was our closest game. Warrnambool really took control of the game and lead by 12 early, but we just stuck to the game plan and chipped away and with 22 -12 last quarter we were able to come over the top”.
Under 18 Miners Boys Head Coach Chris Thornton said, “The boys had a great weekend, we lost our first game, but we refocused on the next game and lifted our defence which carried through the rest of the games and into the grand final”.
Thornton added, “We have had an interrupted pre-season with covid disruptions throughout the tryouts, but this was a great weekend for us, coming up against some zone defences which will hold us in really good stead heading into the Country Championships in a few weeks”.
Both Knaggs and Thornton mentioned the club atmosphere that was around the Ballarat Miners teams. It didn’t matter who was playing there was always someone from another team their support and making noise from the sideline.
The VJBL season will resume on Friday, February 4th before our Under 16 and Under 18 Miners Boys and Girls will head back to Bendigo on February 18th and 19th for the Basketball Victoria Country Championships Division 1 and 2.
