Mental health awareness and education is something I’m really passionate about, especially as an elite athlete. These past few years, I have been treating my mental and emotional health as seriously as I have my physical injuries.
A way I have been able to keep track of this is by seeking professional help. It took me a while to admit to myself that I needed help from an expert, but I am so glad I took that step.
Another thing that has helped me is using a bullet journal where I log important tasks and hobbies or interests I want to do throughout the day or week. This is because I can get caught up in thinking that I don’t have enough time to do things, as priorities can change from week to week, depending on my schedule. Having a visual aid (as I am a visual learner) allows me to find some balance so I become less overwhelmed.
I have to make space for essential things that I may or may not enjoy and ensure that I am making time for other activities to relax and unwind after trainings and the mental exhaustion preparing for games. All the while, I am also dedicating time to mentally/physically/emotionally work through my injuries that can inhibit my performance.
If I can maintain a balance between these, then I won’t suffer as much. I am able to have the energy to be more playful and curious about basketball, and life. This is not always easy, and it may look different to what others like to do, but I think it’s important for overall health and well-being - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Always know that whatever you are feeling and experiencing is valid. There are people who want to help if you just ask, which I think is the hardest thing to do. If you are struggling, reach out to someone, the world is better with you in it!
