The Mount Gambier Pioneers are pleased to announce that Shayden Russell will join the OneFortyOne Pioneers roster for the 2026 NBL1 South season, continuing her progression through the club’s development pathway.
A product of the Mount Gambier basketball system, Russell has earned her opportunity through consistent commitment and performance at the local and representative level. She has been a key part of the region’s junior pathway, including representing South Australia Country and competing at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Championships.
Russell has also been a long-time member of the Limestone Coast Academy of Sport, where her dedication to training and development has been recognised. In 2025, she was named the Academy’s Athlete of the Year, highlighting her commitment, leadership, and impact within the program.
At a local level, Russell has continued to impress with the Mount Gambier Lakers, including standout performances such as a 28-point game during the Country Basketball League season, showcasing her scoring ability and competitiveness.
Her elevation to the OneFortyOne Pioneers reflects the club’s continued focus on providing opportunities for local athletes to progress from grassroots basketball into the NBL1 program.
Women’s Head Coach Matt Sutton said Russell’s development and work ethic have been key to her selection.
“Shayden has stepped up her commitment and workrate and is showing great signs of improvement. Unfortunately has had an interrupted pre season with appendicitis but has hit the ground running on her return”
Russell said she is excited for the opportunity to join the Pioneers for the 2026 season.
“Being part of the Pioneers means a lot to me! It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, especially because my parents both played for the club, so getting the chance to wear the same uniform they once did is really special. I’ve grown up around the program, so it feels pretty surreal to now be a part of it myself.”
“I’m also really excited for everything that comes with it, building new friendships, learning from experienced players, and being able to train and compete at such a high level. I’m just really grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started.” she added.
The addition of Russell adds further depth to the OneFortyOne Pioneers roster, while reinforcing the strength of the Mount Gambier pathway and its ability to develop local talent.
With Round 1 fast approaching, the OneFortyOne Pioneers continue to build towards the 2026 season, with pre-season preparations underway at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre.
