North Spotlight | Mackay make statement over reigning champs

The Mackay Meteorettes started their road double this weekend with an impressive 15-point win over Logan Thunder.

The Mackay Meteorettes took control against the reigning NBL1 North champion Logan Thunder in the second half and got to the foul line 41 times with Cheyenne Bobongie 17 on her own as her team prevailed 93-78.
Logan were back home at Bendigo Bank Cornubia Park Sports Centre looking to keep their winning run going on the bac of last season's championship having opened up 2026 winning their opening two matches.
Mackay arrived for the first of two road games this weekend having split their first two matches and then it was a tight first half with the Meteorettes up two at quarter-time before the Thunder went up three by the half.
It was all the Meteorettes from there with 50 points to 32 in the second half with 21 of those coming from the foul line as they scored the 15-point win to improve to 2-1 on the season.

It was the perfect way for Mackay to begin their road double as they overcame their 21 turnovers by getting to the foul line 41 times for the game and making 33 of them while shooting slightly better than Logan across the board.
Cheyenne Bobongie ended up delivering 23 points, seven assists and five rebounds for Mackay on the back of going 15/17 at the free-throw line.
Sammie Puisis added 20 points and four assists while going 4/11 from three-point land with River Baldwin contributing 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks, and Monique Bobongie 11 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals.
Eden Catip also had nine points and two rebounds, and Chelsea Brook seven points, 10 boards and two assists.
It's a first loss for Logan since Game 1 of the Grand Final series last year against the Southern Districts Spartans with them ending up shooting just 35 per cent from the field and 7/36 at 19 per cent from behind the three-point line.
Leah Scott finished up top-scoring for the Thunder with 28 points and five rebounds on 10/18 shooting from the floor and 7/8 at the stripe.
Vahayliah Seumanutafa added 14 points, five rebounds and two steals, Mikhaela Cann 11 points, eight assists, six boards and three steals, and Kendell Heremaia nine points, four steals and three rebounds.
It was a hot start from both teams as they combined for 58 points in the first quarter with Logan able to score six points off the turnovers from Mackay, but the Meteorettes got up more attempts and capitalised on the way to the 30-28 by quarter-time.
Things tightened up at the offensive end for both teams in the second quarter and they combined for just the 31 points but Logan did add 18 points to just 13 from Mackay for the reigning champs to head into half-time leading 46-43.
That was with Vahayliah Seumanutafa and Leah Scott combining for 21 points for the Thunder with Cheyenne Bobongie and River Baldwin putting up 21 between them for Mackay.
The Meteorettes were able to work their way on top in the third quarter with 28 points to 20 on the back of shooting 8/17 from the field, 4/10 from downtown and 8/10 at the foul line.
Mackay's lead then got out to as much as 15 in the last quarter and they went on to score the victory by that margin to make quite the statement on the road against the reigning champs.
It's the lone game of the weekend for Logan who next are in action next Saturday on the road to the Ipswich Force which is the same opponent for Mackay who back up this Saturday against them.
