NBL1 South Round 3 Preview – Men

Castec Rural Pioneers (1-3) vs Ballarat Miners (1-2)

Its been a long time coming although this Friday night The Castec Rural Pioneers return to Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre this weekend for their first home appearance of the 2026 NBL1 South season, taking on the Ballarat Miners in Round 3.

Mount Gambier enters the matchup at 1-3 and managing player movement giving injury to Titus Robinson, Alex Mudronja & Thabo Manyere along with Kane deWit still on the sideliness recovering from knee surgery. The Pioneers are looking to build momentum on their home court, while Ballarat sits at 1-2 following a mixed start to their campaign.

The Miners are led offensively by Lachlan Dent, who is averaging 22.7 points and 7.3 assists per game, playing a key role in both scoring and playmaking. He is supported by Jaden Campbell (17.0 points) and Brooklyn Bruton, who has been efficient from beyond the arc, shooting over 50% from three-point range.

Ballarat’s offence has shown the ability to score in bursts, averaging 88.7 points per game, but their defensive struggles have been a concern, conceding 94.0 points per outing.

Controlling Dent’s impact and limiting Ballarat’s perimeter options will be crucial, while maintaining composure and efficiency on the offensive end will give Mount Gambier a strong chance to secure a result.

The Pioneers have signed American big man Lucas Gordon, who has arrived in Mount Gambier and and are hopeful that he will be available to debut on Friday. The American forward arrives following a strong collegiate career at the University of Redlands, where he established himself as a versatile and impactful presence. Gordon brings size, athleticism, and the ability to score efficiently while contributing on the boards, adding another dimension to Mount Gambier’s frontcourt.

For the Pioneers, Gordon's availability presents an opportunity to capitalise on home court advantage, with Gordon’s inclusion providing an immediate boost on both ends of the floor. Tightening defensive execution and generating consistent offence across four quarters will be key.

With both sides eager to gain momentum early in the season, the stage is set for a competitive contest as the Pioneers take to Wulanda for the first time in 2026.
