First Nations communities will be recognised and celebrated throughout the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1’s annual First Nations Round, which is set to kick start NAIDOC Week.
The NBL1 First Nations Round will commence today, Wednesday, July 3, and finish on Sunday, July 7. Celebrations from the round will also continue into NAIDOC Week, which will run from July 7-14.
There are more than 100 members of the First Nations community involved in the NBL1 competition across the country, including players, coaches, referees, technical officials, and volunteers. This week they will be acknowledged for their invaluable contributions to the league.
A range of teams across the NBL1 North, East, South, West, and Central conferences will wear jerseys designed by First Nations artists, while all referees across the country have been wearing uniforms reflecting the NBL1’s First Nations artwork all season. Some games will also have First Nations performances and a Welcome to Country before the match.
The 2024 NAIDOC Week theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. Read more here.
“The NBL1’s First Nations Round, like NAIDOC Week, is a chance for all to recognise and celebrate the history and culture of First Nations peoples,” NBL1 General Manager, Dean Anglin, said.
“This round, more so than any other round, we celebrate the talent, hard work, and impact that all First Nations players, coaches, referees, volunteers, and fans bring to the league.”
The action starts tonight in the NBL1 South Game of the Week as the Ringwood Hawks will host the Nunawading Spectres from 6:00pm AEST live and free via Kayo Freebies.
All games will be streamed live and free on NBL1.com.au and the NBL1 App, while the Games of the Week will be available on Kayo Freebies.
