The Hobart Chargers faced a tough challenge on the road on Saturday evening, going down 102-77 to the Eltham Wildcats at Montmorency Secondary College in their Round 8 NBL1 South Women’s clash.
A high-scoring opening half from Eltham proved decisive, with the Wildcats controlling the contest early before maintaining their advantage through the second half.
Eltham came out firing in the opening quarter, capitalising on strong offensive execution and efficient shooting across the floor. Jayde Cadee provided a major spark from beyond the arc, while Rebecca Pizzey controlled the paint, helping the Wildcats establish a 32-27 lead at quarter time.
The home side extended their advantage in the second quarter, continuing to move the ball well and find scoring opportunities both inside and from the perimeter. Despite strong efforts from Tyia Singleton and Sharna Thompson, Hobart struggled to contain Eltham’s offensive flow. The Wildcats won the quarter 24-15 to push their lead out to 56-42 at halftime.
Hobart showed resilience after the break, but Eltham maintained control. Both sides scored evenly for much of the third term, with the Chargers unable to make a significant dent in the margin despite continued scoring from Singleton. Eltham edged the quarter 17-12 to extend their lead to 73-54 heading into the final period.
The Wildcats put the result beyond doubt in the fourth quarter, finishing strongly with a 29-23 term. Their offensive depth continued to shine, with multiple contributors impacting the scoreboard as they closed out a convincing 102-77 victory.
Tyia Singleton led the way for Hobart with a dominant double-double performance of 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Sharna Thompson matched her with 24 points and added three assists. Chloe Broomhall contributed eight points and seven rebounds, with Portia Chopping adding seven points and six assists.
For Eltham, Jayde Cadee led all scorers with 20 points, including an impressive six three-pointers, while Rebecca Pizzey produced a strong all-round performance with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Emily Maltezos added 12 points, and several Wildcats players contributed across the board in a balanced team effort.
The Chargers will look to regroup following the road loss as they continue their Round 8 campaign, with lessons to take from facing a well-executed and high-scoring Wildcats side.

Eltham set the tone early with a dominant opening quarter and never relinquished control, delivering a strong four-quarter performance to secure a comprehensive victory.
The Wildcats came out firing in the first term, capitalising on efficient shooting and high-tempo offence to put Hobart under immediate pressure. Leonardo Colimerio and Zak Cunningham led the charge inside, while contributions across the lineup helped Eltham race to a commanding 38-18 lead at quarter time.
The home side continued their momentum in the second quarter, maintaining their offensive efficiency and applying defensive pressure to limit Hobart’s opportunities. Despite some scoring from Anthony Drmic and Luke Rosendale, the Chargers struggled to generate consistent offence. Eltham outscored Hobart 28-18 in the period to extend their lead to 66-36 at halftime.
The contest remained firmly in Eltham’s control after the break. Both sides matched scoring for much of the third quarter, but the Wildcats continued to maintain a comfortable margin behind strong ball movement and balanced scoring. Eltham won the term 22-18 to take an 88-54 advantage into the final period.
Eltham capped off the performance in the fourth quarter, closing out the game with a 20-11 term to complete the 108-65 result.
Anthony Drmic led the Chargers with 13 points on efficient shooting in limited minutes, while Luke Rosendale added 17 points. Jacob Richards contributed seven points and six assists, with Nicholas Paul adding seven points and six rebounds.
For Eltham, Leonardo Colimerio led the way with 20 points, while Harrison Hornery provided a spark off the bench with 17. TJ Weeks added 16 points, and both Mitchell McCarron and Zak Cunningham contributed 15 points each in a well-rounded offensive performance.
The result sees Hobart challenged on the road against an in-form Wildcats side, with Eltham’s fast start and consistent execution proving decisive across all four quarters.
