Match Report: Chargers Women Hold Off Miners in High-Scoring Road Victory

 

The Hobart Chargers secured an impressive road victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Ballarat Miners 98-94 at The Minerdome in their Round 8 NBL1 South Women’s clash.

 

In a fast-paced and high-scoring contest, the Chargers produced a strong second-quarter surge and held their composure late to withstand a determined Ballarat comeback.

 

The opening quarter was an evenly contested battle, with both teams trading scores in an up-tempo start. Hobart found early contributions from Sharna Thompson and Tishara Morehouse, while Ballarat responded through Constance Hobby inside and Abigail Wehrung’s playmaking. The Chargers held a narrow 21-22 deficit at quarter time.

 

Hobart took control in the second quarter, delivering their best period of the game with an outstanding offensive display. Thompson and Portia Chopping led the charge, supported by efficient finishing from Chloe Broomhall, as the Chargers poured in 32 points for the term. Hobart outscored Ballarat 32-24 to take a 53-46 lead into halftime.

 

The third quarter saw both sides continue to trade baskets, with neither team able to create significant separation. Morehouse remained influential, while Thompson continued to attack offensively. Ballarat stayed within striking distance behind Wehrung and Hobby, but Hobart maintained their lead thanks to a 26-26 third quarter, heading into the final period ahead 79-72.

 

Ballarat mounted a strong challenge in the final quarter, applying pressure and closing the gap through late scoring from Wehrung and Elissa Brett. However, Hobart showed composure down the stretch, executing in key moments and converting crucial free throws to hold off the Miners’ late push and secure the 98-94 victory.

 

Sharna Thompson delivered a standout performance for Hobart, finishing with 32 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Tishara Morehouse added 23 points, four assists and five steals, while Portia Chopping contributed 19 points. Chloe Broomhall was also influential with 16 points and six rebounds in an efficient outing.

 

For Ballarat, Constance Hobby led the way with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Abigail Wehrung produced an outstanding all-round performance with 21 points and 11 assists. Elissa Brett added 18 points and eight rebounds, with multiple contributors keeping the Miners competitive throughout.

 

The result sees the Chargers bounce back strongly on the road, showcasing offensive firepower and composure under pressure in a hard-fought win.

The Hobart Chargers produced a superb second-half response on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Ballarat Miners 114-110 at The Minerdome in their Round 8 NBL1 South Men’s clash.

 

In a high-scoring contest filled with swings in momentum, the Chargers overcame a halftime deficit before surging clear in the second half and holding their nerve late to secure an impressive road victory.

 

Hobart made the stronger start to the contest, finding early offensive rhythm through Jacob Richards and Luke Rosendale while Anthony Drmic helped set the tone with his playmaking. The Chargers controlled much of the opening quarter and outscored Ballarat 35-29 to take a six-point lead at the first break.

 

The Miners responded strongly in the second term, lifting their offensive output behind the scoring of Lachlan Dent and Jaden Campbell. Ballarat piled on 30 points for the quarter and were able to turn the game around, restricting Hobart to 17 points in the period to take a 59-52 lead into halftime.

 

Hobart responded brilliantly after the main break, producing their best quarter of the game. Richards took control offensively, while Rosendale and Drmic provided strong support as the Chargers put up 32 points in the third term. Hobart outscored Ballarat 32-23 in the quarter to regain the lead and head into the final period in front, 84-82.

 

The final quarter delivered a dramatic finish, with both teams continuing to score at a high rate. Ballarat stayed within striking distance through Dent, Campbell and Lucas Byrne, but Hobart consistently found answers at the other end. Richards again led the charge, while Drmic’s composure and late free throws were crucial as the Chargers closed out the 114-110 win.

 

Jacob Richards delivered a dominant performance for Hobart with 45 points and 10 rebounds, leading from the front in a match-winning display. Anthony Drmic was outstanding with 17 points and 14 assists, while Luke Rosendale added 22 points. Nicholas Paul contributed eight points and six rebounds, with valuable support coming across the lineup.

 

For Ballarat, Lachlan Dent starred with 29 points and 10 assists, while Jaden Campbell added 24 points. William Hynes scored 18 points, and Lucas Byrne contributed 15 in a strong offensive performance from the Miners.

 

The result caps off an impressive road performance from the Chargers, who responded strongly to Ballarat’s second-quarter surge and showed composure in the closing stages to secure an important victory away from home.
