Match Report: Fourth Quarter Push Sees Casey Claim Win Over Chargers Men
The Hobart Chargers led for three quarters on Friday night but were unable to withstand a decisive final-term surge from the Casey Cavaliers, falling 106-99 in their Round 4 NBL1 South Men’s clash at Hutchins School.
In the second game of a Friday night double-header, the Chargers produced sustained stretches of quality basketball and held control for much of the contest before Casey’s execution in the final quarter turned the game decisively in the visitors’ favour.
Hobart set the early tone with purpose and efficiency in the opening quarter. Anthony Drmic established rhythm quickly, scoring efficiently both off the dribble and in catch-and-shoot situations, while captain Jacob Richards was aggressive inside, drawing contact and finishing through traffic. Nicholas Paul provided valuable energy off the bench, converting second-chance opportunities as the Chargers built a 26-17 advantage at quarter time.
The second quarter saw Casey lift their defensive intensity and begin to close the margin, but Hobart continued to respond. Preston Bungei and Tanner Krebs supplied consistent scoring for the Cavaliers, while Ibrahima Diallo’s presence around the rim began to influence the contest. Despite Casey winning the quarter 25-22, the Chargers maintained control through composed half-court execution. Richards continued to anchor the offence, Luke Rosendale knocked down timely shots, and Drmic remained efficient as Hobart carried a 48-42 lead into the main break.
The contest tightened further coming out of halftime. Casey continued to apply pressure and improved their efficiency, but Hobart again found answers to stay in front. Richards led calmly, mixing strong finishes inside with trips to the foul line, while Rosendale and Drmic provided key baskets to settle the Chargers during critical moments. Although Casey edged the third quarter 26-22, Hobart remained narrowly in front at three-quarter time, leading 70-68 with the game finely poised.
The final quarter proved decisive. After Hobart briefly maintained their advantage early in the term, Casey lifted their urgency and began to capitalise on repeat opportunities. Bungei finished strongly inside, Diallo controlled the offensive glass, and Jesse Ghee provided important scoring and ball movement as the Cavaliers took the lead for the first time and began to separate.
Despite Hobart continuing to create scoring chances through Richards and Drmic, Casey’s consistency in the paint, ability to generate second-chance points, and composure from the free-throw line proved telling. The Cavaliers poured on 38 points in the final quarter, outlasting the Chargers and closing out the 106-99 result.
Jacob Richards led Hobart with a determined all-round performance, finishing with 27 points and seven rebounds while converting 11 of 14 free throws. Drmic added 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists on efficient shooting, while Rosendale contributed 19 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Paul provided a strong lift off the bench with 13 points and six rebounds.
For Casey, Bungei topped the scoring with 26 points, while Diallo recorded a powerful double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Krebs also finished with 19 points, and Ghee added 16, playing a key role during Casey’s fourth-quarter run.
The loss completes a demanding Round 4 night for the Chargers men, who led through three quarters before being overturned by Casey’s decisive final-term finish.
