The Mount Gambier Pioneers have announced the re-signing of captain Kane de Wit for the 2026 NBL1 South season.

An on-court leader since 2023, de Wit has become a cornerstone of the program through his leadership, consistency and passion for the game. He has played a pivotal role in driving standards, guiding younger teammates and proudly representing the club both on and off the floor.

In 2025, he became the first Mount Gambier-born player to reach 200 games for the Pioneers, a milestone that also earned him Life Membership honours.

De Wit said he was thrilled to return, particularly as part of the new era under new era under Head Coach Peter Godfrey.

“Excited to be back for season 2026. To be part of the new direction for the club under new Head Coach Peter Godfrey is a great opportunity. I can’t wait to get back on court in front of the fans at Wulanda and look to compete for a championship once again,”

Godfrey explained that securing his captain was one of his first priorities upon taking charge.

“Kane’s re-signing for NBL1 2026 was a priority after the ink dried on my appointment to coach the Pioneers. Kane is a savvy play-making floor general with 200 senior games of experience under his belt. I’m looking forward to utilising his leadership and experience on and off the court as we build the roster and head into the season. He’s a ‘young’ veteran with some great basketball ahead,” Godfrey said.

Pioneers President Tom Kosch said de Wit’s re-signing represents a significant moment for the club.

“Kane has been an outstanding leader of our club. To have our captain’s commitment as the club heads into a new era is hugely exciting. In 2025 Kane achieved 200 games, the first ever local product to do so. He contributes hugely to our club and basketball community both on and off the court. Through his commitment and leadership we believe the very best is ahead for Kane and the Pioneers,” Kosch said.
