When the Ringwood Lady Hawks lost a tough NBL1 Semi Final back in August 2019, nobody considered for one second that it would be another 18 months till the girls hit the court again. Also on that day, no one realized that it would also be the last game that Hawks legendary Court Announcer Jim McNally would call from his regular spot in the grandstand.
This week, McNally made it official that he will no longer be the voice at all Hawks Big V and NBL1 home games, a position he has made his own for 20 years.
“At 73 years of age and with the uncertainty of Covid, it is time to step aside.” McNally said.
“I was planning on retiring this year but Covid has bought it forward.”
Although most remember him for being the man behind the mike, McNally has filled many roles within the Association going all the way back to the opening of the Rings stadium in the mid 90’s. He has been honored with every major award including the Founders award in 1998 and then life membership in 2008.
During his time, McNally served as RBA President from 2000-2003, Vice President from 1998 -2000 and was a key member of the Committee from 1996 -2003. He also used his professional background to develop a software package that ran the Ringwood Basketball competitions, way before the programs we take for granted today.
Despite donating his many hours to all areas of Ringwood Basketball over 25 years, most current Hawks members know Jim as the man behind the mike
“Jim is the soundtrack to our 6 Senior State Championships, he is a big part of some of the best memories our players have in their sporting lives.” Hawks President Tim Mottin said.
“It will be strange to start the season with a new voice, someone has big shoes to fill.”
The final word should probably go to another Hawks Legend who has also put his heart and soul in to the Club and worked closely with McNally.
“I have always admired Jim as a role model with his unreserved dedication to serving the RBA and thankfully been a beneficiary of his wise guidance.” Bryon Dunkley-Smith said.
“His dulcet tones echoing across The Rings will be missed on game day.”
