It might the that unmistakable sound of the ball being bounced on floorboards, perhaps the smell of stale sweat or the frustration of a bad call by our friends in black and white. We have all missed the game we love but there is no one who has missed it more than Ringwood Hawks star and Co-Captain Matt Fennell.
This week Fennell confirmed his commitment to the Hawks for NBL1 2021 and he may have been Hawks Coach Ken Harrington’s easiest signing.
“I am a Hawk and I plan on playing here until I can’t play anymore” Fennell said.
“I have really missed the game but even more than that I have missed guys.”
The Hawks players have not seen each other in the flesh since March, which is nearly 8 months but have managed to stay in touch through emails, texts and social media. With Fennell though, he is a Basketball guy, he is either playing it or thinking about playing it and the lost season and the lockdown of all Victorians would have been torture to the Hawks strongman. With the recent positive signs from Government in recent weeks, Fennell, Harrington and the Hawks can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel.
“As soon as we are allowed, we will get all the guys together for a meeting and a scrimmage.” Harrington said.
“I hope the guys are in decent shape because we will have to hit the ground running”
Fennell has used his lockdown time well, maximizing his ability to stay strong and fit so when that day comes, he will be ready to lead the Hawks up the NBL1 ladder. His 16 point and 8 rebound average in 2019 was a key reason he was Club MVP alongside Adrien Sturt and he will be a huge part of any success going forward.
“I can’t wait to walk in to a stadium again and NBL1 in 2021 can’t come quick enough.” He said.
