THE Miners men have enjoyed a strong start to their season after four rounds sit in 4th spot with a 5-2 record.
Sunderland says the group has showed pleasing early signs adapting and changing within games and a consistent spread of contributors has been key.
A win over a tradition rival proved to be an obvious highlight.
“Beating Bendigo is always good!” Sutherland says.
“On par would probably be North-West Tasmania. We struggled to manage a double road weekend seven days earlier, the way that we re-grouped and went about the whole weekend in such a short time was really pleasing to see.”
Import Jack Davidson, an Indianapolis export and Wabash college graduate, has quickly had an immediate impact, averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
“Obviously Jack is proving to be a great pickup but we all work together and everyone compliments each other so well,” Sunderland explains.
“We have so many guys doing really evident things and a lot doing things behind the scenes.”
Sunderland says his group is looking to build on its consistency over the next few weeks.
The Miners play Diamond Valley and Frankston away this weekend.
THE young and developing women’s team began their campaign on a winning note, defeating Melbourne Tigers in Round 1.
It was a confidence booster for the group, many which are new to the NBL1 competition, according to Baker.

“For the younger players, it’s how to play at a senior level and the adjustments they need to make. For the team, we are still looking to gel as a group. There have been phases and quarters where everything has clicked and we are looking good, but then other times we go back to old habits.” And while the Ballarat outfit features plenty of emerging talent it’s been a legendary veteran who continues to lead the way. Baker describes Kristy Rinaldi as ‘drinking from the fountain of youth.’ “She has taken up a variety of roles from guarding Keely Froling, spending time playing inside, playing every position, while leading the team and helping promote the Ballarat culture she has had such a role in developing over the past 16 years.” Strong, competitive starts will be a focus for the Miners over the next few rounds starting on the road this weekend against the Eagles and Blues in Melbourne. “We tend to get ourselves off to slow starts, which puts pressure on ourselves. We’re holding clubs to competitive scores, we just need to find a way to see the ball go through the net more,” Baker added |
