Penrith defeated Sutherland 55-46 on Saturday evening at Sutherland Basketball Stadium in a defensive slugfest that saw both teams struggle from the field.
The Panthers overcame poor shooting (just 23.7 percent from the floor) by dominating the glass with a commanding 63-47 rebounding advantage. Jordan Vasquez posted a monster double-double with 14 points and 17 boards, including 12 on the offensive end, giving Penrith multiple second chances. Serika Shillingsworth led all scorers with 15 points on efficient 58.3 percent shooting, including 10 points in the paint.
Sutherland couldn't find offensive rhythm, shooting just 25 percent while committing 23 turnovers. Madeleine Norris led the way with 16 points including four triples from outside, while Aliza Fabbro added 11 points - eight coming from the charity stripe. Despite connecting on seven threes compared to Penrith's three, the Sharks couldn't overcome their disadvantage on the boards.
