The Ballarat Miners Women are excited to announce the signing of current WNBL star big, Alex Bunton, for the 2024 Mitsubishi NBL1 South Season.

Alex, 30, joins us after a decorated career across Europe and the WNBL, spanning more than a decade, most recently finishing this past season with the Canberra Capitals where she played 12 games and averaged 16.9 minutes.

Upon signing, Bunton said “I’m super excited about joining the Miners family! Working with Kennedy is something that I’ve wanted to do for a while now and I’m grateful that I get to be a part of his vision for the upcoming season!

Alex added, “I can’t wait to meet all the girls and get the season rolling! The club so far has been so welcoming, so we feel right at home! “

Women’s Head Coach Kennedy Kereama said “I am really pumped to be reconnected with Alex after our time together in Canberra during the 21/22 WNBL season. Bunts will bring some much needed size and is a great target in the post, will add defensive paint presence, can rebound at both ends, and will add a voice and leadership on the court.”

Kereama continued by adding “Her experience in the game speaks for itself and she has played at a multitude of levels. Bunts most importantly is a great human and has been a great community person in every playing environment she has been a part of. I know she will have a great impact in Ballarat both on and off the court.”

Basketball Ballarat CEO, Nev Ivey said “Alex brings a wealth of experience gained through playing at elite levels both here in Australia and overseas. Her leadership qualities and maturity on and off court will be invaluable to our young playing group and a great mentor for our women’s and girls’ program broadly.”

Alex becomes the 8th member of our women’s roster for 2024, joining fellow WNBL players in Mehryn Kraker, Micah Simpson, Ella Gordon & Abbey Wehrung along with returning locals Millie Cracknell, Milly Sharp & Jemma Amoore.

The Ballarat Miners tip off the season with a home game against arch-rivals Bendigo, at Selkirk Stadium on Wednesday, April 3rd. Miners Memberships remain on sale.
