2023 NBL1 West Round 7 Review

The Wolves bounce back with a win against the Goldfields Giants.

After four consecutive double-headers, the Chambers Franklyn City of Joondalup Wolves had only one opponent to face for Pink Round of the 2023 NBL1 West season, the Goldfields Giants.

The Wolves were successful in keeping the Giants off the glass, spurred by a tenacious first quarter rebounding performance from Izzy Miotti who had 4 offensive rebounds and Emma Klasztorny, who had 4 defensive rebounds. This reflected in opportunities for Robbi Ryan who had a whopping 18 points in 10 minutes including 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Regan Turnour-McCarty had a standout performance for the Giants, with 31 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

Game MVP Teige Morrell had a monster night with a total 28, 14 and 6 performance to go along with 3 steals and 4 blocks for the night. Shani Amos and Olivia Basso were efficient off the bench, combining for 5 threes on 8 total attempts.

The Joondalup Wolves beat the Goldfields Giants 100-50, now 9-1 for the season.

The Wolves streak ends with a defeat in the Goldfields.

The Wolves had a strong first quarter in which the whole team was crashing the boards for a total of 17 rebounds (5 offensive) leading to second chance opportunities. Jordan Wellsteed’s defensive efforts rewarded an early steal and dunk on the other end. The Wolves led 21-18 heading into the second quarter.

Although the Wolves were successful at the foul line, the Giants won the quarter by making 11 of a total 21 attempts to the Wolves 5 makes on 15 attempts. The Giants opened a 6-point advantage heading into the second half, 37-43.

CJ Turnage, Quintin Dove and Mathiang Muo combined for 69 points in the game. CJ led in assists with 7 and Mathiang led the game in rebounds with 11. Star import Michael Dupree had 32 points including 13 in the fourth quarter for the Goldfields Giants.

The Wolves fought hard to close the margin in the final minutes, reducing the difference from 11 to just 4 with a minute remaining, but unfortunately couldn’t get over the edge, losing the game 96-100.

Our next opponent is the Warwick Senators, who we face on the road May 20th.
